A message from our Admin

It's been a great 12 year run for SlothMUD III (out of the 17 years overall of SlothMUD) in which we have seen a huge amount of additions and changes.

We've had literally thousands of different players come and go over that time.  We'd like to thank you all for keeping us motivated to keep making this game better.  We obviously don't do it for profit (as we pay to keep the game going).  We keep it going because you guys and gals keep asking playing.

To the long time players:  We've had a lot of new players in the past few months and especially appreciate the time and energy you have put into helping them along.  It is that spirit that has helped this mud continue to thrive.

To the new players: Welcome to SlothMUD at a very exciting time.

We've come to a point where we want to implement some pretty big changes and believe the only way forward is to restart everyones' characters.  The changes include opening up all 9 classes to a single character, a few key changes in the way experience points are awarded and much more. We expect that you'll soon see characters with levels in 5 or 6 classes, more variation in the way groups run and more interesting non-player characters.

We are going to continue to make this game better by adding new content including areas, items, quests, equipment and more.

We hope that you will continue to with us during this exciting new phase of SlothMUD.  We've tried to ease the transition for returning players by keeping your passwords from your old characters.

Please keep checking this site, as we will be updating it continuously until Sloth returns.

The one thing we have learned from being involved in both the Immortal and Mortal side of this game, is that its not the amount of time you have invested in a character but the FUN you had doing it!

SlothMud III … the ultimate in DIKUMUD! The most active, intricate, exciting MUD of its kind. This multiplayer text-based online fantasy game is enjoyed continuously by players worldwide. With over 23,500 uniquely described rooms, 8,300 distinct creatures, 12,200 characters, and 7,100 pieces of equipment, charms, trinkets and other items, our world is absolutely enormous and ready to explore.

With the introduction of 4 new classes (necromancer, druid, bard, and monk) to go along with our previous 5 (cleric, mage, warrior, thief, avatar), forging, brews, in-game quests, multi-classing, multiple continents, and much, much more, Sloth III offers enough challenge to make even the most seasoned mudder never want to go anyplace else. Adventure and explore boldly by yourself or with a party in a coordinated group. Either way, gameplay is a challenging, exciting, and consuming experience.

Slothmud was started in late 1991 by a couple of college students and opened to players in early 1992. It is a descendent of the DikuMUD gamma 0.0 game codebase (see the title page for the authors of DikuMUD). It has been running continuously ever since.

From the beginning, SlothMUD has had a unique world. In the 15 years this world has grown to immense size, now comprising five continents and three islands.

The name "Sloth" was chosen to embody the original philosophy of the mud, which was to make everybody's lives as easy as possible. This convenience is embodied in commands such as "hunt" and "scan", as well as a multiclass system that allows each player to eventually access a great deal of the available class abilities.

SlothMUD turned into Sloth II when it changed ownership. It then became Sloth III after a set of vast, world-altering changes initiated by the current administrator, Jake.
