Nationalizing insolvent banks is GOOD.

Some people are calling for nationalization of our banks, and others are vehemently against it (like some of our senators.)

The word has a negative stigma to it. People think that nationalizing the banks means that the government will run the banks, handle daily transactions, and loans will be made based on politics (aka having connections) instead of profit (aka based on merit.)

This is NOT true.

In America, when we say nationalize, we mean that the FDIC takes over the bank on Friday and carves up and auctions off the assets over the weekend. This is why all bank failures are on Friday.

Notice that in this scheme (which is one of the FDIC's main jobs, by law), the taxpayer absorbs the losses of the bank, but it also gets the upside, in the process of the auction. Right now, we are socializing the losses and privatizing the gains.

So far in 2009, we have nationalized 16 failed banks.

Citigroup's operations are tremendous, and it may take more than a weekend to figure out how to unwind it, but if you believe that a bankrupt bank should be shut down (crazy, I know!), then you are FOR nationalization. Call it receivership or preprivatization if you want.

So the next time someone tells you that nationalization is bad, educate him.

Go to Canada or any other country with NATIONALIZED health care. You are "fortunate" to get cancer or some disease... first you have to wait to see what doctor you will eb allowed to see....then you will wait to see what the government will allow the doctor to do..then you will wait to see if the prescribed medicine/treatment is approved by a panel who then advises the doctor to either go ahead and treat or deny treatment..oh usually after all that waiting, your either dead or alot further worse off than you would have normally been.

US warships head for South China Sea after standoff

A potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend.

Mr Obama’s decision to send an armed escort for US surveillance ships in the area follows the aggressive and co-ordinated manoeuvres of five Chinese boats on Sunday. They harassed and nearly collided with an unarmed American vessel.
