No Caps! Flame On!

Postby jezer » Tue May 13, 2008 12:01 am

This post is in direct response, to a few players telling me I haven't stirred up trouble on the board in a while. So get involved... get heated and flame on!

Caps... I don't like them... They make all the players with the same classo the same. Eventually a new player becomes as good as a player that has been around for years. It tends to block player creativity to become what they want. Also once a player reaches a cap, there is little challenge for that player to go on with... you get weasel talking about improving warrior, and me talking about increasing druid damage cause I'm capped!

So why do we cap? Because we are scared that things will get out of balance... but why is this such a bad thing... I mean if you work hard enough... you should be rewarded!

Caps that suck...

*5 Mill XP cap on Lyme
How biased to thief can you get? Caster's find it hard to solo xp, but they are better at taking bigger mobs with more xp... By making a 5mill cap on lyme you simply just punish all the classo's who are slow and powerful. Necro's running 5mill stab mobs with pets just doesn't really work, it's far better to run fewer, bigger mobs for casters. Perm no cap I say!

*AC cap
If you can wear it, then you should be able to get it's benefit. This necro wearing -11 but only getting -10 is ridiculus. Hack code of the century.

*Miscellanous Other Caps
Can't think of 'em off hand, but I don't like them!

Am I advocating warriors running around at -13 with 100 weapon damage? Yes! Monks running around with 100% damage reduction? Yes! Cause to get 100 weapon damage/reduction, you flaming well earned it!

How can we limit the a 4th position mage from having the same spell damage as a 1st position mage! You don't.... however you make it more expensive to gain for the 4th position mage.

Just like to gain a level in the 4th class is more expensive than to gain one in your prime level...

So for EXAMPLE to buy damage reduction...

Prime Monk - 5 tokens
Second Monk - 7 tokens
Third Monk - 9 tokens
Fourth Monk - 11 tokens

But kill the caps! My philosophy is that a players road to enhancement should never end, you just control how hard that road is!

Ok, that's enough talking, lets start arguing! :D

oh. I was thinking along the lines of propeller beanies and other kinds of caps and hats and fancy headwear. I'll just move along to more philisophical matters, such as apostrophes and periods, and maybe exclamation marks if I'm feeling particularly frisky.

WOW, YOU'RE QUITE THE WHINER JEZER (oh, wait, thats not the caps you meant)

really though...

...they could always put a cap on the number of posts per day that you (jezer) are allowed to make (zero might be a good number)

...or they could also put a cap on the number of times your IP range is allowed to log into sloth (again, for stirring the pot, zero might be a good number)

other than that, I do believe that with your suggested method, the opposite of what you hope to achieve would occur. heck would figure out the best classo ever (with no caps mind you) and everyone would copy him....then, everyone would be the same.

Let me tell you something about caps... (and as usual I speak strictly for myself, and not on behalf of any other admin/immortal).

Some caps make no sense to you. Like AC. The people who work this mud do so on a voluntary basis. Because they love the game, or they like people who play it. But no matter how much you love a game, in the end it is a game, and real life becomes a way more important consumer of time. (wives, kids, jobs, life in general). So many of us dont have the kind of time required to go through and re-adjust all the eq in the game to meet a requirement that should have been in place for years, but the same 'who has the time' question arose everytime, and no one had the time.

Besides, I don't think the players would have liked very much if someone did have the time to go back and adjust AC on every item in the game. O, your robe went from -.5 to -.1, sorry. Thus the cap.

The imaginary line that cant be crossed so you dont have to wear a dress just because you're a mage. If you're a fantasy RPG fan (off which this mud is mostly based), then you'd know thieves in any kind of metal armor couldn't really hide now in a brightly lit room because they were in town now could they?

Instead of altering every piece of eq in the game to fit what is basically a standard in RPGs of Sloth's nature, we simply put a cap, so you could continue to wear your current (apparently hard-sought-after) eq.

It's never been a requirement for the reasons behind the decisions to be posted, but I can assure you most of them do have a reason that was discussed for a few weeks at least (and I've seen a couple last a few years) before going in.

This post is because I am bored tonight

Good Post, good post, wouldn't say great... but keep working on it...

Give me a zero post count... original idea I'll give you that...

Whining about "whiners" is like hearing a lecture about gun safety from a guy about to shoot himself in the foot. It's ironically funny every time! :D

The truth is, I post to the board while I'm at work, and I'm not exactly enjoying my job at the moment, even though it really is a sweet job... and for this crime you must suffer. Looking forward to hitting some xp in... 2hrs and 49minutes.
