Hitroll?

Postby *juggleblood* » Sun Feb 25, 2007 9:27 am

I recently upped my hitroll by 4. Went from running at +15 to +19. I'm not noticing much difference, if any. Anyone have an opinion on this?

Thanks

Hitroll Smitzroll

In the annals of Slothery, hitroll never played an important roll in gameplay. Percentages of actually hitting mostly depended on AC and Level comparisons of PC vs PC/MOB combatants. With several *ahem* new changes going in, hitroll will soon start to have value.

Thanks, I thought some kind of change already went in that made hit roll more more significant. So I sacrificed a few hit points to gain some hit (electrum cuirass, diamond sleeves). But I guess its not worth it yet as I'm not really hitting any more stabs than before. I always thought bard stabbers were kinda cool for being able to sing valor for themselves, but I guess its really not that significant either.

I'm not sure difference for stabs, but I saw a strong difference in Unicorn when he went from +3hit to +6hit, as far as slicing and dicing mobs goes. But then he's 3x non caster, and I'm sure there's some thaco issues in there somewhere. This might be something low level characters might want to think about when they factor in equipment.

What are the other benefits of brothers in valor on stab except hitroll, anyway?

I'm still trying to figure out if a high hit roll has zero effect on stab success or just a very small one. And if it is zero, what is the cutoff at which it is no longer helpful.

I wish an imm would be willing to explain more about how hitroll works and how it is factored into stab success. Since hitroll is displayed in score and since there is a wide variety of equipment and spells available to modify it, there is no reason why this information should be a secret.

i don't know about the actual calculations, but it sure feels like it helps to me. I didn't really start to notice until i got around +12-13, but compared to when i used to run at like +8 hit, it's a difference. I think classo plays a part too - my mage and my thief have same +hit and almost the same +dam, and my mage whiffs a hell of a lot more, on the same mobs.
Don't be stupid - we have politicians for that

Hitroll

As you mention, there's a lot of hitroll equipment in game and it's visible in score. That is enough to actually track the numbers and find out for ourselves what difference +hit makes. Imms here rarely spell things out for us, and it would probably bore us if they did.

I'd suggest running a small set of mobs and tracking those stabs separately rather than hitting a normal stab run and tracking. Try to pick something that you don't hit 95% during normal combat. Get about 100 stabs and track (whiff whiff, whiff stab, stab stab) with the lowest +hit you can achieve. Then add the +hit eq and see what the difference is on another 100 attempts.

Above all, don't trust your perceptions. It's easy to hit 45 stabs and miss the last 3 then believe that your stab rate sucks. FYI, the last time I tracked stabs with a Thief prime, I adjusted by +12 to hit through eq and didn't record any difference in the stabs. That's been years ago, and I don't have the details any more.
