Playing Sloth without Telnet

Postby Thraxas » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:28 am

Quick one to put your brains to:

(The answers probably no btw)

I've got some downtime between appointments in an unfamiliar town, as is my want I've found an internet cafe to play Sloth for a few hours, trouble with this one (and its the only one in town) is that they don't have telnet installed and won't let me plug my memory stick in to use my client.

Is there any other way to access sloth?

Unless I'm sorely mistaken, you're SOL on this one thrax. I can't think of another way to access the mud w/o telnet or a client. Hate to be the bearer of bad news.

Sometimes you can do:

Start -> Run
type cmd in the Open box
then type telnet slothmud 6101

This may work as most windows installations come with a telnet application somewhere in their path. It's quite possible that your internet cafe has gotten rid of it.

I'm guessing they won't let you download one either, but this one doesn't need an install, just execute.

I used HyperTerminal to tunnel way back in the day... was decent for getting past military firewalls, but more or less requires you to have local site to connect to and set up ppp.

I think it's also somewhat dated technology these days.

Set up a wireless access point on an internet connection on another floor. It's unlikely that every company in your building blocks outbound telnet. Find a person willing to do this for you by going out and standing at the smoke break locations for a few hours a day until you find someone who looks appropriate to ask.

Then just hook up your laptop and you are good to go...until someone starts to track down the source of the wireless signal, but if your buddy puts it on a powerstrip with his PC, it'll only be on during business hours and he can shut it off if people start asking questions.

Note: This is merely a hypothetical way of getting around a firewall. I don't condone or imply that anyone should mud from work or try to avoid any firewall software.

Mud from public computers

If anyone is still looking, I ran across a web-based telnet app a few years ago.

Port 80 is nice.

What if your local IT team thinks that its a good idea to shut port 80 down on every computer at your location, will this still work?

If port 80 is blocked = you can't browse the web at all = no this won't work.

Technically, you could get it to work, but if you had the resources to do it, it would be much simpler to just use Clink's method.

Chucky that link didn't work :p

Clink's method might be good but I work in a bank so most of the IT ppl
won't give out secure password to outside network. This can cause hacks
into the bank and bad news bear.

But if I could just tunnel out to telnet ...
