Pthieving Sucks - here's my rant.

Postby Jag » Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:46 am

Yes, it does.

Tonight, I was playing a fairly new lowbie character and was pthieved. I wasn't the only one to get hit. I'm not sure if the other player who knew they were hit was a true newb or not, but the other person yelling was also playing a low level character.

I didn't have anything of consequence stolen - the lowbie character I had on didn't have anything worth stealing. And of course I wouldn't leave anything valuable in inventory anyway. There is no education motive to pthieving.

What was stolen? Recall scrolls - maybe a few coins - didn't bother checking. Worth nothing to me and worth nothing to the thief. But, basically it was setting me up to die next time I got in trouble, if I hadn't noticed the theft.

Big bad Pthief stealing a lowbie character's scrolls. Its rediculous. Just pissing off players and stirring up trouble.

So I write it off as some idiots idea of fun and go about my business. Then head back to Vk and find a maxed out Vker thief stalking me. Time to call it a night. Maybe time to take a few days off from Mudding.

I play for fun, if I want aggravation I don't need to log on to get some. Is this what Sloth Mud is about? Picking on lowbie characters who don't have the levels to fight back?

This kind of crap gives our mud a bad name. Sloth Mud is unfriendly to newbies? I have spent too much time helping out starting players to let this pass. Imms need to take a hand and protect new players or we won't have any.

Playing with the crazies here is fun. I enjoy that this is a group oriented mud. I like most everybody. But pthieving lowbies for the sake of pissing people off is poison. Cast 'remove poison' Sloth

Couldn't agree more, and driving away new players makes it all that much more harmful to the mud, but the powers that be seem to think it's a good idea, so whatever, the playerbase can stagnate I guess. I've played games before where as a newbie you got targeted as soon as you logged on because you're an easy mark, and I've never returned to those games. Personally if the imms don't want to remove pthieving for whatever reason, then at least make VK no-steal so the real newbies have a chance to get a clue before they get bent over and raped by some asshat pthief.

Ranting Sucks- here's my pthief

Postby Hades » Thu Feb 08, 2007 7:09 am

Actually it would make better sense to be unable to steal from a <15 level
character. Not all valker's are newbies 9obviously) and the true newbie's/lowbie's shouldn't be a target anyways since in the usual sense they
would not have any items worth of interest. Having said that, a valk char that
has some decent gear is open game and should be on his/her guard at all times. There are plenty of safe rooms to regen in as well as other valker's who normally will come to one's aid in hunting down a pthief. I agree that stealing someone's recall scroll, food, drink at ANY level sucks because that
accomplishes nothing and is piss poor gameplay. I like the idea of pthievery
but with great power comes great responsibility.

Having been a crooked pthief once upon a time, here's my 2 cents on it.

I feel no sympathy to players who fall victim to REAL pthieves who steal valuable eq, and generally stay undetected by the mud, etc.

However, I have to agree that stealing recalls, food/drink containers, and generally being an ass just to piss people off is being detrimental to the game.

Pthieving will prob never be weeded out altogether, but there has to be greater consequences for pthieving than the small slap on the wrist nowadays. Ppl just make cute noobie thieves, keep quiet about their real identity, and nobody will know who they are.

quit stealin from noobs u punks

I'm guessing that this was just a case of some newb trying out pthieving to see what it's all about.

I don't think Jag qualifies as a newb, so not much pity for a few lost recalls or whatever.

I do have my eye on on a char called pfft. Levels fast, claims to be true newb, but yet doesn't ask any questions or for help. Classo doesn't make much sense unless he's a real newb or a pthief. Altho, if he was a pro pthief I think he'd have put necro in there for darksight. So not sure, just stay alert.
Talk to the clown.

I generally stay out of complaining threads where we aren't going to change anything, but I'll say a three things to set the record straight.

1) We aren't going to change anything.
2) We protect new players through several means from being run off from pthieves. Try running one off as a ptheif and you'll figure out quickly what happens to you. We value new players and anyone saying things to the contrary is uninformed, has ulterior motives, or is completely jaded and won't accept the truth.
3) Jag is a newbie. No recall scrolls and gold were stolen from any of his characters. We track this type of thing explicitly (among many other things).

Cheers

Takes a load off my mind too. (please note sarcasm) I really thought my lowbie character had recall scrolls taken. A worthless and aggravating act. Hell, I give'm away to anybody who asks. Why steal? Wonder how I was mistaken? (Sarcasm over for a bit) Here is the story.

I was in BH just outside alchemist guild, went s. Saw a portal opened for you message as I went by. Felt a "breeze", went back 1 north and looked in portal - Portal to Bar. Went in and Mason was the only one there. A thief character (more then 20 levels higher them my lowbie) who had been in the inn moments before had just rented.

I checked my inventory - no recall scrolls, looked a back a bit in my wintin log. I had checked inventory just a few minutes earlier when selling stuff at shops. I had recall scrolls at that point. Since I had only walked around town, I assumed I was pthieved. I went about my business cause it was such a little thing. Only got really pissed later when it looked like someone was now targeting me on Vk (that one may have been paranoia). That made me pissed off, cause I thought the Pthief was coming back for seconds. Then I complained about the whole deal and posted my rant.

Good thing you guys have this under control.(Oops sarcasm again) I really think your monitoring may have a hole or two. I wonder if I am jaded? Didn't think so. Oh well.

I really really like this Mud, I think the Imms are great and I am constantly amazed at the work they do for us all. I would like to sincerly thank you all for what you do. Next time you are in Atlanta, let me know and I'll buy the beer.

My suggestion: Pthieving attempts should fail unless hitting targets of similar or greater levels. That would be a cool challenge for those that like to be on the edge. Changes or not, I'll be here anyway. (Sloth Mud addict :)

After all we have the best Mud!
