Chop Block Yammer

Postby Fenyang » Fri Jan 19, 2007 3:13 pm

I hate when someone waits for the last minute to out bid me on chop block...

There were 17 bids for a cape of infinite shadows in the chopping block.

 First Bid: 2007-01-17 01:41:26 (by Fenyang, bid 3mil)

I was bid leader from the first bid until 27 seconds before closing.

 Last Bid: 2007-01-19 09:04:08 (by Mog)

 Auction Closed: 2007-01-19 09:04:35

Mog won auction for 3mil + 3 coins. Congrats Mog!! *CRY* *CRY* *CRY*

I hate the chop block, people start bidding in the last 10 minutes of auction. (or in the case of Mog in the last 1 minute 17 seconds of auction)

I know. I know. I should have bid more than 3mil, but I didn't think cape would go over that amount.

I wish chop block had an overtime. If Splork out bids Krom in last hour of auction, then Krom (and only Krom) gets an extra hour to make a bid. Is that fair?

If no one else thinks what Mog did was lame, then I may start bidding in last 10 minutes too.

Sincerely,
Fenyang :(

if you want something, put a high enough bid on it that noone will go over.
You do realize if you bid 10m on a 100k item, and noone outbids you, you only pay the 100k, not the 10m, right?
otherwise, the bitching is just lame. man up.
Don't be stupid - we have politicians for that

then chop auctions could last for months....

there is a reason for the count-down clock on each auction.. (pay attention to it)

each auction is all based on how badly you want that item, if you'll stay up and how high you'll bid. (if you really want it bad enuff then bid higher or go cycle it)

i have stayed up many late hours to ensure winning an auction.

dear god I hope you never get on eBay..

It's not a legit. gripe. If he was prepared to pay enoughg to win then he should have bid that. If not, then tough shit.

There is actually a lot of thought behind this system. I'll agree with Alb and Auto that it is up to the buyer to [b:2vuj7vsv]put in the price they are willing to pay, not the price they think it should go for[/b:2vuj7vsv].

The seller controls within an hour when they want the auction to end. If they pick 3:30 am your time, that's the breaks. If you follow the guideline above, it won't matter whether you are awake or asleep, you'll either get it for what you are willing to pay or you'll be outbid. If it happens while you are hitting refresh or with your eyes closed and head on a pillow, it's the same result.

Just to clarify one point on the specific auction mentioned. Only one person knows how much Mog was willing to pay, Mog. He may have bid 20 mil, but he got it for a paltry sum more than anyone else was willing to bid. In this scenario, the fact that he waited until the last second would be irrelevant even if Fenyang had bid 18 mil. The point is, last second does not equal sneaky or smart for that matter. Not following the bidding guideline is how Fenyang outsmarted himself.

If we are going to have pity on anyone, let's pity the seller. He could have gotten more if he had smart bidders. Let's face it, Chasm, Raodrunr, Vadim and Mog also made multiple low bids which means they didn't follow the guidelines either.

I do need to get around to putting together a good help file on this thing and fix a few bugs, but it's not near the top of my priority list at the moment.

well I for one really appreciate how well the chop block runs.. there were a few bugs while moving it to the new host, but that was cleaned up pretty fast.

I have made a hefty fortune and gotten some killer deals thanks to its features..

Thanks to all who thought/coded/created it! :)

**PS. Aaron.... the thought of that statement truly frightens me

Real example to compare is Ebay.

If you dont bid enough, you dont get the item. People "snipe" all the time and bid seconds before the item ends.

To think you can just sit back and bid cheap to win is silly.

Chop block works just fine. You win some you loose some.

*lol* Hades, I did get up early... I checked auction 30 min, 10 min, 5 min, then 2 min before closing. I had the top bid. :)

[quote:1suvri5p]made multiple low bids which means they didn't follow the guidelines[/quote:1suvri5p]

This happens a lot, that why I think it is a good idea to post a string of low bids 10 minutes before auction closes. I will do that in future, if general opinion is ok with it.

only thing I think really sucks about the block is, you're willing to pay 3m so you bid that, and some punk comes in and bids 3m+3coins and wins. The bid increment thing is supposed to stop that but if the high bid is jumping from 2m to 3m in the last seconds it's certainly over the 1% increase it's demanding, and 3 000 003 is just as valid as 3 030 000 (which would be the next bid after 3m).

And sure, you trolls can say 'so bid 3m +10c yourself', and then the snipers will go to +15, until you have to bid a full million extra just to be sure someone won't jump your bid by just a couple coins. that's lame.

Wow, what a whiner. I can't believe I wasted my time listening to Fengcrybaby.

The block works great, Clinkey. Don't fix it.

There are no snipers. You guys only see this bid at the last minute and see what you want to see. If you had bid 5 mil on the item, it would have only applied the minimum amount to show you winning. If you're winning at 3 mil and someone bids higher, they don't win. More of your 5 mil is applied to keep you winning the item. So now it's at 3.5 mil. If that's still a bargain for the item, someone may post a slightly higher bid. They still don't win, the item goes up to 4 mil and you're still the winner. The only way you lose is if someone actually outbids your 5 mil.

These bids that you call sniping are actually bargain hunters. If they see an item going for less than it's worth, they will bid on it. If the item is going for a fair market value, they won't bid.

You can do the same bargain hunting. If you see an item going for less than it's worth, post what you think its worth. You don't have to wait until the last minutes of the auction, you could bid this way as soon as the item comes for sale.

I did think that gauntlets of thunder were too low at 7mil so I eagerly drove the price up to 15 mil in the course of about 30 secs...

That's more like it
