Death Attacks

Postby kjartan » Wed Dec 27, 2006 1:40 pm

Lately I have added "death attacks" to a few mobs (the banshee's wail and the beholder's black ray, for example) using a game mechanism that I saw in D&D and liked. I thought I would explain how it worked.

Basically these attacks roll damage like a normal attack, possibly quite a lot of damage. If that's not enough damage to kill you, then nothing happens (you don't take the damage). If it is, then you die.

In general I will try to make any further death effects work like this.

Wait, are you saying there are chickens and ducks on Lyme that DON'T have death attacks? What an oversight!

heh.. naaah, besides, the mob's as good as dead by the time you can use deathblow

Seriously, deathblow can be handy in a group, but as mentioned elsewhere, deathblow is rarely used in solo play imho - you're better off blasting than wasting rounds just to find the mob is not quite dead enough for deathblow (unless we have some sort of message added in future saying the mob is ..err ..blowable)

..so about that Warrior death attack..

Well that sure heightens the importance of max hp for tanking, not to mention not leaving heals for the last second :)

I like it.

Quite a few messages in the game will mention if the mob is a he, she or 'them', if that's what you're implying.

For chars without blasting (me) it's handy to keep a valor sword in inventory. From my rather crude estimates, deathblow seems to be possible at about 50% awful. So, if you're like me and are constantly looking at the mob, you get a general feeling for how many rounds go past for each mob condition. Sometimes I'm off a round or two, but it's saved me more than a few times.

A cool indicator that the mob is near death could be:

The balor demon begins his death throes and thrashes wildly.

The mob could also do extra damage during this time or get
an extra attack per round or something.
Talk to the clown.
