errr.. I don't think so - penalize players for working hard on their characters? Exactly what sort of incentive does that give players to log on? None.

Regardless of the outcome of this voting we aren't doing a pwipe in the forseeable future. I think the only reason to ever do a pwipe is when the game rules have just undergone a change so drastic that the old characters just don't make any sense any more; also when you can afford to lose half of your players. We try not to make such big changes in Sloth - basically, if a change would require a pwipe, we won't do it.

If there is an economic problem with inflation or eq-hoarding or something like that, there are better solutions than a pwipe. I can just picture the Fed saying "inflation is too high; our prime rate controls don't seem to be helping; we're just going to have to kill everybody and start over."

I don't think you could fix inflation by killing people, inflation tends to skyrocket during wars, genocides, etc..

Although it might work on homelessness or unemployment.

Ya know whats funny.

People bitch about pwipes, because it destroys invested time in nothingness.

A: That time is invested in nothing that actualy exists. Sure it exists in the
fabric of time which is the internet. But thats not really there either. Is it?
It exisists solely in fiber optic lands. In the mind of computers, which will
inevitably kill us all one day anyway.

B: People have a phobia of loosing virtual possessions. I worked for it,
there for it must be illegal to loose it?

My Track Record.
Ive seen this from both sides, having inevitably wiping 4 and 2/3rd's muds
so far.

I wiped Soul Cypher (1.66 times) The 1st was an accident during a Halloween
quest. I thought I had the files backed up, (I did have the equipment, just
not the char files). So when I restored from running an avatar quest, the
only characters who got to keep their junk were those named A-F. The
2nd time was full to move on and fix pfiles.

I wiped Soul Cypher II.

I wiped Shankara.

I wiped Dogma. Though this one wouldnt have happened had the host
not been lost.

Its a time of fun. Rebuilding. Rediscovery.

Invariably. Those who played and were wiped, almost* ALWAYS returned
to play again. The names may have changed due to the wipe, but they still
played again. They still learned again. They still grouped and soloed
again. They still popped equipment again.
* almost only counts in hand grenades, I know.

More over, I found this to be respectable. Because instead of bitching and
whining about the loss, they simply moved on, accepted the loss, and
rebuilt them selves back up each and every time.

Because each and every time they would achieve again and again.

I watched characters perma death their roughneck avatar's during quests
and groups. Watched a 6x40 +28 avatar do this. He still turned around
and made another character, the exact same that VERY night. Actualy it
was me who killed him in a mob.

Whats funny, is I still have all the player files.

The game should be played for love of the game.

Not a self centered love of a character.

Remember this much.

In the end, there is only void.

To those who use the phrase 'even the playing field': even what? do you
even know what the expression means or do you say it because its a
popular gripe? We've been there, we've done that--and the people that
sucked, still suck.(the good experienced players are still good, and the
good INexperienced players learned quickly and GOT good!)

exist at all?

Time is something you only get once, and if you spend it
doing something that is important to _you_ you dont want it to be
wasted, no matter what the task. Maybe priorities change over time,
and maybe to some its not as important as it is to others; but thats per
individual.
Starting over once is annoying enough, but I know for sure that even the
good players will get burnt on doing that crap over and over; and those
are the ones that you want to stick around.

I dont support the evening the playing field theorum.
A good game will have an even playing field, the only difference remaining
is the difference between hardcore and casual gamers.

I've always been anti-stagnation.

If the pond is covered in slime and gunk, the pond needs to have a
river attached to it to keep all the algea and fungus and shit from growing
so the pond can support life. A stagnant portion of water will support no life.

You can move the data with a keyboard and a mouse: wordpad, vi, vim,
excel, sql, pico, edit.exe. you can print the data on a piece of paper for a
hard copy, or burn it to a cd.

If a persons house burns down, they start over, and build a new house, or
buy a new house (or their insurance does), and fill it up with more stuff and
more junk, until they have to buy a shed (vault) to hold all their crap in.
George Carlin has a funny stand up set on 'stuff'.

If a persons car gets wrecked, they buy a new car (or their insurance does)

When an upper atnospheric EMP hits one of these days, the data will be
gone, but the tree, the house, and the car will still be there. The data on a
computer wont. (the car wont work if it was built > 91 though). The house
and the tree will still work. There will how ever, be a shortage on gas,
since most pumps work off electrical switching, which will has on the emp.

Thats the difference in tangibility.

But in the end, its all dead anyway.

 i never thought i would ever quote diazz... but this is one of the the only two important things listed in this thread.

the other of course would be.

This thread was started by[i:291w8k2f][b:291w8k2f] Brad[/b:291w8k2f][/i:291w8k2f].. who has no life and only plays sloth.. he has 45% of the chars ingame anyway. he would truly be the only one to benefit since it would be ridding him of a whole bunch of shit chars. So take his opinions with the same importance as you would a burping dog.

 If you take this thread seriously, then you really should seek professional help. Some people (myself included) just like to stir things up which is all this is. The Imm's wouldnt do it without a major problem or general consensus anyway. And do you really think they want to hear all that bitching? [i:291w8k2f]"it is just a game" [/i:291w8k2f]

Data

Postby Avatar » Tue Sep 26, 2006 11:11 am

I agree with Mr. Six Dragons. Data is there. Just because you can't feel it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Try ignoring your corporate backups for a few months, you'll find out pretty quickly how much it's worth. We've had atmospheric EMP bursts already. Things can be disrupted for a short time, but if you think there will never be a functional laptop again afterward I'd guess you're wrong. Human society did not end the last time we had an EMP burst.

Then, and I know this isn't related:

[quote:232poh9t]If the pond is covered in slime and gunk, the pond needs to have a
river attached to it to keep all the algea and fungus and shit from growing
so the pond can support life.[/quote:232poh9t]

You'd make a terrible druid. Algae and fungus is alive, so the pond is still "supporting life"...even if it's not life that you approve of.

Not a big one. :)

I see, so to a druid, red-tide would be a good thing?
