Disaster Recovery

As my contribution to random chat, I wonder if anyone has seen this:

http://www.ready.gov/america/npm/index.htm

One of my friends sent advice, ..."And finally, once you've prepared yourself, your home and your family, ask around at work to see what they're doing and what plans they have in place. You might just be surprised."

So, is anyone here prepared? For myself, this falls into the category of "This is important, but I haven't invested the time yet. Eventually I plan to take some steps, but for now I'm totally unprepared."

I have a great first aid kit, and I know that water comes from the sky, so that knowledge combined with some good old american imgineering has led me to believe that when armageddon hits I will become a Road Warrior of sorts and roam the Australian country-side looking to bring civilization to half naked teenagers. Oh wait. What I really meant to say is that you can only ever half heartedly prepare for major disaster, but half heartedly is better than not at all.
Many of you are as old (or more ancient) than I and remember the scary Y2k bug that was going to drop airliners out of the sky on us. Well, it took more than some fancy computer to that, but spending all your time worrying about that will only pay off if it happens to you, which it most likely won't, or none of us would be able to buy insurance, so until that day comes I hope you are all having a pleasant time.
Peace :D

When the day comes, its the folks with the biggest gun and the most ammunition that will be prepared. (as much as i hate guns)...

Believe it or not, we have anti-radiation pills and gas masks from the early post-911 dirty-bomb paranoia days.. if you live in New York City too you'd probably understand.

I used to carry a flashlight, thick blanket, and extra set of clothes in the trunk of my car. That seemed an easy enough prep for being stranded overnight which used to be (pre-cell phone) a likely enough occurance.

These days I'm more considering creating PDF's of important documents, and storing them away from my house somewhere. Birth certificates, diplomas, insurance papers, ect. It seems to would be pretty wise, I could send a CD or USB stick to some family in another state. Also, to have a contact list of friends / family somewhere available - wallet info card - seems easy enough.

I'm prepared for extended periods of bad weather and auto mishaps. If armageddon ever happened, I'm in the middle of nowhere, so bombing us into the dark ages would mostly be an improvement.

Yeah storing critical info somewhere other than your house is prolly a great idea, family is a good bet, so is a decent deposit box at a bank! :D
