Autolycos or rather Autolycus

Postby kjartan » Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:17 pm

I always thought that the name Autolycos came from Xena, but apparently not: this guy used it first[/url:1c47gn80] (search that page for Autolycus; as a bonus, includes full lyrics of The Autolycus Song.)

actually i did create this char based after Bruce Campbell's role on the Hercules/Xena series. Bruce has always been one of my fav actors, not to mention entirely insane.

when i went to use the name and create this char in 97, autolycus was already taken.. so i had to modifiy it as the fully[b:258kwu51] automated search engine of destruction![/b:258kwu51]

Or: the name embodies (in Latin rather than Greek) the motto inscribed in gold letters over the portico of the temple at Delphi, "gnothi seauton", or "know thyself". (Auto = self, Lycos = search engine, i.e. Know). Although really "know thyself" is not a very good translation, what it meant was more like "know that this is a temple of the gods and you are a crappy little mortal".

Actually, the wikipedia entry for Autolycus explains that there was an actual mythical character that the Hercules/Xena character is based on, so presumably Shakespeare borrowed it from there.

Probably you're thinking of Jarlsberg[/url:2mgdf01y], or perhaps Croghan[/url:2mgdf01y], Kadchgall[/url:2mgdf01y], or a nice Chevrotin[/url:2mgdf01y]. None of which are "smelly", although Croghan is said to be aromatic.

Autolycus

Actually, if you read the song there's a quote two lines down that I found interesting:

[quote:89u9k0mm]Autolycus:
[Aside]
If the springe hold, the cock's mine.[/quote:89u9k0mm]

I don't think I want to know.
