Sanc Duration

Postby *juggleblood* » Fri Mar 03, 2006 6:45 pm

How is Sanc duration caculated?

I timed it out 10 times today and results varied from 253 seconds to 298 seconds. Thats between 4 and 5 ticks. Help sanc says duration is 3 ticks.

Masterful sanc was 403 seconds.

Anyone have any idea how it actually works?

afaik it can't be predicted other than a very vague idea of when it might fall.. too many variables. It also depends on casters level (aegis), and of course masterful casting comes into it, and it's variable duration regardless - can't remeber the exact parameters as it changed a couple of years ago now, but standard sanc can be anywhere from 2mins 45secs and up I believe.

Forget even trying to make a countdown lite timer based on when the sanc was cast because it will never work accurately. What I do is just start a countdown from the one minute sanc down warning message.. and if it really bothers you, assume it will drop in 3 minutes from casting since that is usually the minimum for sanctuary.. and even that may change now with things like futility and other effects, who knows..

Ok, but the average duration must be longer than 3 ticks.

The lowest I counted was 253 seconds and the highest 298

The median was 275, thats over four minutes.

The only astrological influence was minor long shadows, if that could even have an affect.

yes for sure, the average is definitely more than 3 minutes, but there's still a minimum duration and you never know when it may happen, which is what makes it so difficult to create an effective sanc timer that counts from casting.

Another option is to have a timer just advise after every minute (ie: sanc has been up for 1 minute, sanc has been up for 2 minutes, sanc has been up for 3 minutes, etc.) until you get the 1 minute sanc falling message, at least that way you have an indication of when the sanc may fall prior to receiving the 1 minute warning message.. just a thought.

Being old sch00l, I had a sanc/aegis counter set up for the old tick system. Being a lazy person, I didn't bother eliminating it when they changed the regen and spell counting methods. The thing still works quite well. It is usually a touch short - 30 - 45 seconds. A masterful will be an extra tick. It gives me a rough idea of what I have left, and then I can watch for the 60 second warning. I find that 60 second warning to be accurate to better than 3 seconds.

I set my counter to fall on the third tick after casting for sanc, and the sixth for aegis. (Yes, I am still counting ticks.) My wb and fly counters still work like a charm as well.

Not claiming to know how the current sanc or aegis actually works, though.

"10 times today and results varied from 253 seconds to 298 seconds. "
Basically, that is how it works. :)

The help still says '3 ticks' because before spell durations went to seconds, sanctuary would fall after 3 ticks passed. (Hence, people would cast sanctuary right after a tick making it last ~235 seconds.)
