"mixed reality event"

I've never seen "Second Life", evidently it's some type of virtual reality world. So this "event" deal has an online replica of a little coffee shop, so the online visitors see the same environment as the RL visitors. On top of that, some kind of projector-camera deal will allow the RL visitors and online visitors to interact / talk to each other.

It's not necessarily new, but still interesting. I recently got an IP phone software so I can have phone calls through a bluetooth headset. My broadband isn't the best in the world, but already the voice quality is better than my cell phone. As the tech gets better and faster, at some point video conferencing to the desktop will become effective. So when does a VR like this "Second Life" become a useful alternative to phone conference calls / conference room based video conferences?

More importantly, when will I be able to log into a VR like "Second Life" and stroll around BH, cast spells, and kill me some pthieves?

I made a mixed reality setup in 1992, using a copy of Sloth with a different map as the virtual part. Next to the computer terminal running the telnet session to the mud, there was a box of miscellaneous items with numbers taped to them. Also, scattered around the rl college campus were other items with numbers taped to them. By typing in the number of an item found around the campus, it appeared in the mud (and you put the physical item in the box.) When you got an item in the mud, you could transfer it into the real world by taking the thing with the same number out of the box. It worked pretty well.

interesting idea for conferences, but the main point to teleconfrencing (for me at least) is being able to play solitaire, roll my eyes, and mute the phone for extended periods of time during really boring meetings... VR life wouldn't allow for that, if done properly... and then I'd have to actually listen to managment presentations! *cringes*

Laff Alberich, we have the same types of meetings here. We need a button that puts the video on "freeze frame" so your avatar sits there looking attentive but you can kick back and play solitaire.

Nice KJ, could make an interesting scavenger hunt if you had to find clues online / pop the item online, then could go in RL to get the item from the box to examine it / use it.

Better yet, if I kill a mob on sloth and pop a pizza, the delivery guy shows up with a large thin crust pepperoni and mushroom.

Ok, that would get my vote for best quest ever.

At the beginning of the quest, we all submit an order for one large pizza, our address and the number of a local pizza delivery place.

Whoever wins the quest gets their order placed and it shows up at their door.
