Poll: How old are you?

Postby Grue » Mon Jan 30, 2006 12:28 pm

Partly triggered by some of the discussion around appropriate language, partly I'm just nosey. I know we have some players who have been playing since Sloth 1 and 2 and have to be old farts by now (sorry guys :)), but have also cahtted online to a few high-school kids lately. If you find questions about your age offensive, just don't answer :)

Are you going to start another poll asking how many people 16 and under read the forums?

Age vs Swearing

Postby Avatar » Mon Jan 30, 2006 2:55 pm

As someone pointed out on the other thread, not all of us object to swearing because our kids may see it. I don't have kids (and I'm not a kid myself) but I do agree with the rules against swearing on public channels.

Nods, public channels (gos, auction, newbie, quest, shout) is understandable, I'm sure those of us who do swear occassionally can restrain ourselves that much, but on group, clan, private channels (like hosers etc), or using say in a room - forget it.

Actually I was more curious to see if this supported what I think a lot of people assume which is that only college and university kids have the time to MUD. I posted this at the start of the work day in the US, so the responses may shift quite a lot as the day goes on, but this certainly doesn't look like a student demographic.

By the way, I also feel that depends on the room. You are running a group and want to cuss in a regen room where only your group is go for it, people can always choose to leave a group. I don't think people should be cussing in the inn or shops with the say command, even if your group is regenning there.

A real story BTW. I was having dinner with my family and a few friends, and my 12 year old leaned across my 14 year to get the salt, who promptly responded with a WTF are you doing (he said the abbreviation not the words). We all looked at him and asked since when he was allowed to use language like that, and he actually came back with "Well I see people talk like that on the game you play and the web-site they use, so why is it OK for you?"

That obviously went into a discussion around age and appropriate contexts, but just so you know this is not a hypothetical situation for me. I am trying to tell him that he can't listen to rap because of all the cussing, now I have seriously had him throw that back at me. Of course the fact that he is a typical 14 year smart-mouth doesn't help.

Damnit Weasel. I was just getting ready to sell these new Weasel toys I made. See? They look just like you and they even yell 'I'm Being Repressed' whenever someone thinks about changing the code on Sloth.

Do you think 12345 is actually his age? or the amount of lost concentrations he had in a row once... to close to call...
