How about a SlothWiki

Postby Strago » Thu Jan 20, 2011 6:46 pm

Has any thought gone into the idea of having a community developed SlothWiki?

I think that a wiki would be a very accessible way to get players good information. It might help with player retention, and it would increase the relevance of SlothMud to search engines (a lot of sloth themed content, means more search engine relevance).

A good game wiki that I have used is the Dofu wiki (http://dofuswiki.wikia.com/wiki/Dofus_Wiki) this wiki has really helped improve my game experience, and I think a similar tool for sloth could help her as well.

If this idea is liked, I would be willing to setup a wiki for this game however the admins would like (external on wikia, external using wikimedia or even internal using wikimedia).

I would also be willing to do the grunt work of porting a lot of information over to the wiki.

There is a lot of good information currently on the sloth site, but it feels a little stale, and does not have a lot of information beyond the technical.

Users being able to amend content, would allow this information to stay fresh, and up to date.

Cartography could be moved to the wiki allow it to be updated by users as changes are made and discovered. It would also remove the webmaster as having to be the single source for updates and changes, which is a huge task considering how large/rich slothmud is.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Dan (currently Apoc, not sure where my older characters or their logins went)

I discussed this with Chobbs about a week ago, at which point I joined a pretty nice
Shyla CHOP group and discussed it with them. (Sam being the fiercest opponent (or realist?) :P)

In the end I decided that I was going to set one up for you guys, using mediawiki.

As for cartography, I hadn't thought to move that to a wiki but its not a bad idea,
especially considering the nice search capabilities of mediawiki

Awesome!

Let me know if you need any help with it. Feel free to drop me an email. I have been doing this web stuff professionally for about 15 years now, so don't feel like you would have to get me up to speed with anything.

Happy to help and will email separately but really not awfully sure what you mean by help? Perhaps if you outlined what help you needed more might see a task they'd be able to assist with.

Mornin' folks,

Some elucidation then!

Looking for:
- proofreaders
- folks who wish to do some short writing
- masters of the art of cut and paste
- heck, even some graphical artists would be cool

Preferably those with a bit of experience under their belt regarding the workings of Sloth, and/or know a thing or two about wikis in general.

Benq forwarded to you my newbie guide (which needs a lot added to it). I would be happy to help out as I can, although I'm only familiar with the nub stuff.

Mornin' folks,

Silent feedback, so I'll assume things are fine.

Added/fixed a few random things to the Wiki that I had forgotten, just a few minor things here and there. Still a lot of red links that will hopefully be filled in sooner or later. Wonder what else I forgot!

Stuff I'm looking for:
- Logs from previous quests, such as who lists, notable mobs, rewards, synopses, that sort of stuff. Hoping to expand the area opener/past quest pages for posterity's sake (nothing like that nostalgia factor). Just dummied in some nonsense for now, will make it prettier later.
- Anyone remember who built some of the uncredited areas? Or approximate addition dates? Leaving them uncredited irks me.
- High Plains and Moon Temple, both on BH, still need maps.

Another note: IE disagrees with a lot of the css. So there might be some anomalous formats if you use IE.

Anything else that should be added? If not, it's time to move on to another project/sabbatical, whichever one comes first.

So we wont be able to add any info about mobs, just the areas/mud, right?

Seems like a good addition to the eqlist or if the two are intergrated.

What I'd add about mobs:
- size
- exp
- damage
- unique procs and how to cope with them
- group size, if necessary

I believe auto mobs would have to be monitored or its feedback filtered.
