Testing the stab, spoiler alert!

Right, after finding this little gem in the mud i was pretty excited as i could do what i love doing most of all.. TESTING!


You recite an identify scroll which dissolves.
You feel informed:
Object 'keen scalping blade *Xxx*', Item type: WEAPON
Item is: PERSONAL RESTRUNG
Weight: 2, Value: 0gold, Worn in: TAKE WIELD
Damage Dice is '1D1'

Why is this significant ? Because it takes away the randomness and allows you to see the bones of the game if you will.

I guess we all know how sloth3 stab system works as there were plenty of people who were interested in exploring and testing the games a bit further
than people do now. Anyways, it operated on a multiplier system where every damage added 17 hp to your stabs, i.e there were 17 multipliers
they got added from level 1 untill level 40 where you were maxed out.

How do you find your multipliers ? You try to stab something with 1d1 dagger and X dam, then you try to stab the same target with 1d1 dagger and X+1 dam

That way, the difference between those 2 values is your multiplier. I heard how sloth4 stab system was different from sloth3 so i was eager to test it and find out
what is what.



And so here are the results for you guys to see, if you dont like reading logs then skip to the end.

Remember, 6 dam was 124 HP damage and 10 dam is now 145 HP damage, which only gives us addictional 21 HP damage for 4damage

21/4 = 5.25, nowhere near the 7HP bonus from every dam point we were seing earlier.



Seeing how cizin's sanctity and damage reduction bonuses could affect the results we recruited a noob.

As a conclusion to this venture...

As tested on Cizin

1d1 Weapon with

3 damage = 103
4 damage = 108
5 damage = 117
6 damage = 124
6 damage with 7 stabdam = 131
7 dam + 4stab damage from opal bracelet = 135
10 damage ( 6 dam from eq + Lion chorus ) = 145



But at the same time, some seriously confusing results while stabbing different players :

With the same damage ( 10 ), Kanae got stabbed for 127, Stun got stabbed for 141 and Cizin got stabbed for 145..

With 6 damage and Level 20 Xarken got stabbed for 67 damage where cizin was getting stabbed for 124 and Mystic level 40 prime got stabbed for 87


And by bothering a few necros i tested a bit on wraiths

Where i was stabbing Cizin for 117 damage on a single stab, i managed to double stab a wraith for 142 damage or 71 damage per stab, this is relative
to what i could stab Xarken ( level 20 ) for with 6 damage.



So what is the result after taking precious playtime away from so many people?

It seems that every point of damage adds on average 6hp to your stabs

And it is highly probable that anything low level that you stab, gets saved for half damage per stab and the higher level it becomes the less damage it gets saved to..

Here is the stabtable again


1d1 Weapon with

3 damage = 103
4 damage = 108
5 damage = 117
6 damage = 124
6 damage with 7 stabdam = 131
7 dam + 4stab damage from opal bracelet = 135
10 damage ( 6 dam from eq + Lion chorus ) = 145

I guess depending on mobs levels you can get anywhere between 50% of the damage in the table to its full ammount.

At 5 damage i was doing 117 damage per stab to Cizin and yet it takes me 2 stabs to splork a 45hp mob :

Heh, whats the bet they remove the 1d1 item, and then change the code. :twisted:

Your not supposed to measure it and find the bugs!

6 damage with 7 stabdam = 131
6 dam + 4stab damage from opal bracelet = 135

Some items have hidden effects that don't identify iirc.

That's a real funny result all the same :D

As for different damages for different classes, it could be inbuilt ac. But still weird, and I'd guess buggy. Formula's have probably been modded to much over the years, Splork eluded to the saves code being just as loopy.

Actually its 7dam +4 stabdam Jez, it was a typo which i corrected - there are no bugs as far as im aware related to stabdam, it does what it does - always adding the exact damage to your stab unlike normal damage that fluctuates.

I now have absolute certainty that all the differences in damage we saw from stabbing different players but with the same damage was only due to their levels, nothing else. There is no way to make out what they reduce due to their monk position and the sanctity and the rest in this stabtest due to the differences in levels affecting the damage :(

However, with this test the rough multiplier pattern can now be seen, as while stabbing different players with different dam the damage is added and reduced in the same proportion.
So if i stab Cizin for 103 with 3 dam and 108 with 4 dam and i stab Stun for 99 hp with 3 dam then i will most definately stab him for 104 with 4 dam and so on! This seems to suggest that the damage from EQ is not getting reduced, but rather it's the base damage of the stab that is variable.

Even if the exact multiplier varies with damage ( i.e its not constant like it was in sloth3) a pattern can be seen. 5-7 hp per every dam.

Also, we can now see that the damage you do by your stab depends not only on your damage but also on the mobs level.

It seems to me that the stab formula is not very different to
(%basedamage*%moblevel + (%weaponroll+%damage)*%multiplier)+%poisondamage

So if the multiplier is 5-7 then at 20 damage i will have 100-140 damage that wont fluctuate and will be constant, which then adds to variable base damage and then all this together gets added to a constant poison damage.

There is no saves aspects to a backstab and from what I remember( and just looked at) mob level does not play a part in the calculation( the stats are most likely showing a reduction caused by max hps, not level). LArger creatures can be stabbed for larger amounts of damage. Stabs In sloth3 were doing upwards of 1000-1250 hps and we are on pace for very similar damage, and probably more, when and if Cizin reaches Avatar 40.

Stab equipment and poison get added after the base damage of a stab, and the base damage has always been variable. There are too many things which effect the base damage but to list a few are max hps of the target, damage reduction, position of thief in class order, level of thief, crippling strike, gods and lions( which has some randomness also), astrology( which has randomness as well), thief multi, etc etc.

This is for a single stab and just an average representation of what they have been doing ingame. I have no clue if gods or lions were being sang during these results. Different stabs will result in different output. This is a log, starting at point 0 of a stab and going all the way through the different damage additions. Cizin is doing upwards of 1k damage for a double stab and no excruciating blow and XXX is somewhere around the 600-725 mark.

Well Splork has already sorted this out, let me just add a couple of numbers from S3 code - please note the numbers most likely have changed since then, but you can get the idea anyway.

To keep it really simple I assume there is no poison, no sleigh of hand, no other factors. In this simple case total damage would be calculated as follows:
damage roll (char dam + weapon dam) * 9 (multiplier for 40 level thief) * 0.94 (for non-prime thieves only)
PLUS
max mob hps * 0.065 (with a cap of 550 for prime, 400 for nonprime)
Again this most likely has been changed, and also iirc stab damage would calculate differently if a player not a mob was stabbed, but the idea is the percentage of max mob hps takes a significant part in total stab damage.

From the tests above it's pretty obvious that the multi is not 9, as you get anywhere from 5 to 9 hp damage from every damage point, so the code was changed from what you have bel.

As for HP playing a role in this, again its hard to say how much it is, but it plays a bigger role than thief's weapon roll and damage roll thats all i can say. Testing it yesterday i was stabbing some mobs in regen gear ( 4 dam with secari dagger ) and in my damage gear ( 15 dam with 33 stabdam and trocar of the demilich) and the difference was minimal, i.e i could stab a mob to big nasty wounds in regen gear and to pretty hurt in my stab gear.
