Great for gun deaths, but I'm talking about crime rate. Australia has one of the highest crime rates in the world. And most were committed by criminals with guns against the general populace without guns. You know those pesky lil crimes like robberies, rapes etc etc

Tap,

I live in Australia, what your saying doesn't make sense. I work with a south africian who moved over here partly because of their crime rate. In south africa just going to the shops to buy milk can be taking your life in your own hands. I know of Australians in south africa that have been shot by intruders in their own homes.

I've been here 12 years and I've never heard of someone I know being... stabbed or even having a gun pointed at them. Something is wrong with your statistics, or it's per capita or something like that.

There are drug related shootings between gangs fairly often, but when it comes down to armed offences against the general public... there is no way we can even come close to the US or most of Africa.

I cite from several sources, all of them recent, and not to get off-topic because I hate when that happens but here's some quick facts:

# The percentage of the population that suffered "contact crime" in England and Wales was 3.6 percent, compared with 1.9 percent in the United States and 0.4 percent in Japan.

# Burglary rates in England and Wales were also among the highest recorded. Australia (3.9 percent)[/color:h0b7jypz] and Denmark (3.1 per cent) had higher rates of burglary with entry than England and Wales (2.8 percent). In the U.S., the rate was 2.6 percent.

"After Australia and England and Wales, the highest prevalence of crime was in Holland (25 percent), Sweden (25 percent) and Canada (24 percent). The United States, despite its high murder rate, was among the middle ranking countries with a 21 percent victimization rate

England and Wales also led in automobile thefts. More than 2.5 percent of the population had been victimized by car theft, followed by 2.1 percent in Australia and 1.9 percent in France. Again, the U.S. was not listed among the "top 10" nations.

The study found that Australia[/color:h0b7jypz] led in burglary rates, with nearly 4 percent of the population having been victimized by a burglary. Denmark was second with 3.1 percent; the U.S. was listed eighth at about 1.8 percent.

Interestingly, the study found that one of the lowest victimization rates -- just 15 percent overall -- occurred in Northern Ireland, home of the Irish Republican Army and scene of years of terrorist violence. [/color:h0b7jypz]

*** Analysts in the U.S. were quick to point out that all of the other industrialized nations included in the survey had stringent gun-control laws, but were overall much more violent than the U.S. ***

Also, they note that Australia[/color:h0b7jypz] leads the ICVS report in three of four categories -- burglary (3.9 percent of the population), violent crime (4.1 percent) and overall victimization (about 31 percent)

Australia[/color:h0b7jypz] is second to England in auto theft (2.1 percent).

In March 2000, WorldNetDaily reported that since Australia's widespread gun ban, violent crime had increased in the country.

WND reported that, although lawmakers responsible for passing the ban promised a safer country, the nation's crime statistics tell a different story:

* Countrywide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.
* Assaults are up 8.6 percent.
* Amazingly, armed robberies have climbed nearly 45 percent.
* In the Australian state of Victoria, gun homicides have climbed 300 percent.[/color:h0b7jypz]
* In the 25 years before the gun bans, crime in Australia had been dropping steadily.
* There has been a reported "dramatic increase" in home burglaries and assaults on the elderly.

While you might not know anyone of being stabbed or having a gun pointed at them, studies show otherwise.

[quote:2r6fr1xh]* In the Australian state of Victoria, gun homicides have climbed 300 percent.[/quote:2r6fr1xh]

That could be true, that's where the drug gangs were having a war. But that war was like a couple of years back. And it was probably only 20 people - and the trash of society I might add. Your statistics are old.

As for burglary it's dropped quite dramatically. Because we only have like 4% unemployment... and those 4% are the kind who are too lazy or stupid to find work.

But I guess we can quote studies all day long, and they won't match... I mean what the researchers tell us one day they tell us the opposite again the next day. I mean was it in the 50's in America the medical profession was selling radioactive water to improve the health of the general public?

You also have to remember in poorer countries the majority of crime goes unreported... and it's a little hard to report murder when your dead... (that's the strongest point I've made so far... *nods*)

I read something about a rape happening every 12 seconds in south africa... and with a population with one of the highest HIV rates, how you can continue to profess Australia's crime as the biggest from your armchair in another country is laughable... but futile to argue.

There is a saying Tap... The man with experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument.

That's to say... if you look up where I live on the internet to check the weather and you say it's raining, and I am here and the sun is shining... I'm right!

Released in May '08 by the AP--was somewhat surprised considering how liberal the AP is.

[quote:2u69d2uc] I mean what the researchers tell us one day they tell us the opposite again the next day[/quote:2u69d2uc]

I concur

[quote:2u69d2uc]how you can continue to profess Australia's crime as the biggest from your armchair in another country is laughable[/quote:2u69d2uc]

I never said was the biggest, I said it was one of the highest concerning crime in general. Main point researchers made that crime was on a steady decline for 25 years BEFORE the gun ban and afterwards, it shot up dramatically. Think about it.. alot easier for a criminal to do a home invasion (as an example) when he knows there isn't a gun waiting on him on the other side.

[quote:2u69d2uc]That's to say... if you look up where I live on the internet to check the weather and you say it's raining, and I am here and the sun is shining... I'm right![/quote:2u69d2uc]

Well technically we could both be right... thats a global thing.. where I live..it can be raining on one street and a couple streets over dry as a bone.

[quote:2u69d2uc]You also have to remember in poorer countries the majority of crime goes unreported[/quote:2u69d2uc]

Yeah, I can see that..the general populace doesn't have a way to defend themselves and with corrupt politicians and an even more crooked police force, reporting a crime more than likely will mean a death sentence to you and possibly friends and family.

Thanks Jezer, you managed to pinpoint my argument. There is also another saying--

Guns don't kill people, husbands that come home early do.- Larry the Cable Guy

WTF? Where's your quote that any of these crimes even involved a weapon? No link whatsoever between gun proliferation/laws and crime has been shown here.

It's talks about some of those statistics that you've quoted, and how they are misrepresentations of facts.

Doh Jezer, I actually went to the 1st website u were putting out to dispute me

[url:3m6uofuq]http://www.nationmaster.com/cat/cri-crime[/url:3m6uofuq]

scrolled down to the bottom of the list after going into several links which totals everything up and ...

Total crime victims :
[url:3m6uofuq]http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_vic-crime-total-victims[/url:3m6uofuq]

#1 Australia: 30.1%[/color:3m6uofuq]
#2 New Zealand: 29.4%
#3 United Kingdom: 26.4%
#4 Netherlands: 25.2%
#5 Sweden: 24.7%
#6 Italy: 24.6%
#7 Canada: 23.8%
#8 Saint Kitts and Nevis: 23.2%
#9 Malta: 23.1%
#10 Denmark: 23%
#11 Poland: 22.7%
#12 France: 21.4%
#13 Belgium: 21.4%
#14 Slovenia: 21.2%
#15 United States: 21.1%[/color:3m6uofuq]

But somehow I get the feeling this turned into a US is better than Australia type argument and thats not what I was throwing out there.
I'm sure Australia is a nice place. I've never been there and besides being able to find it on the globe and knowing the accent when I hear it,
basically my knowledge is summed up to never get into a boxing match with a kangaroo. My original point was that the U.S. could come into a leadership with a Nobama/Michael Bloomberg-type mentality, that besides the onslaught of problems they will bring for the country, they will do their damnest to take away your guns as they "tighten" their control over your life that could potential ****** an outright civil war.
Myself, i'd like to enjoy Labor Day..and what better way than...

At first I just thought you got wrong statistics when this all started... It was just a passing comment to say hey, that's not the truth, I know I live here... but I understand now, your a gun lobbyist.

I've since found numerous links about those Australia facts you spouted only to find there sources have all been fairly well known misrepresentations from the American Gun Lobby. (second link)

I don't know much about the American Gun Lobby, but I've heard enough to know they are fanatical and ignorant fools without reason. It's almost like a faith, because they believe what they want to believe even in the face of compelling reason. As the old saying goes you can't argue with idiots.

And for the record Tap, Australia might be at the top of that "crime rate" statistic... but that rate includes non violent crime... Which also includes stupid things like parking fines, traffic infringements and suicides and picking your nose with the wrong finger. If you click the crimes that involve firearms, the United States IS ABOVE (motions with his arms) HIGHER! BIGGER! than Australia in every single flippin one, so stick that up your gun lobbyist pipe and smoke it! You need to think twice before you self righteously out countries that other people live in, for your own agenda points. Not a wonder America has problems with respect in the world with an attitude like yours.

Gun violence > Homicides > % homicides with firearms (most recent) by country

#7 United States: 39.5604
#21 Australia: 16.3435

Gun violence > Homicides > Firearm homicide rate > per 100,000 pop. (most recent) by country

#8 United States: 3.6
#26 Australia: 0.3073

Gun violence > Homicides > Non-firearm homicide rate > per 100,000 pop. (most recent) by country

#16 United States: 5.5
#27 Australia: 1.5729

Gun violence > Homicides > Overall homicide rate > per 100,000 pop. (most recent) by country

#14 United States: 9.1
#27 Australia: 1.8802

Now repeat after me...

I Tap, do solemnly apologize for being a doofus. I have misrepresented other countries to support my own beliefs. I understand now that the gun lobby has been feeding me lies and propaganda. I apologise for my bigotry and my lack of ability to see reason, I was wrong.
