BUT a M/C/Monk/N would also help out alot. With Monk you can Grip,
Passage, Protect, and Flurry to get an extra attack.

There is not perfect char, it all depends on how u play. You have to do
a lot of trial and error to find the BEST choice of Chars for YOU and only YOU!

I for one have made about 7-8 chars and most of them have reached 3x40.

Im pretty sure i said this but clearly leaf overlooked it, you can't grip with mirrors, and mirrors are a big part of being a mage.

Fine you can't grip, but Counter Attack is a GREAT skill that a Mage would
need without a Warrior skill to Parry.

Fair enough, and Akasha is right. Every classo has it ups and downs, once you learn to play the classo and the ins/outs of the game you will find tricks to doing almost anything.

The problem with the 4 new classes is they are only good good with their
prime abilities. Everything is about sacrifices. Give this for that, tit for tat.

All about what ya wanna do though.

True That True That!!!

I would suggest because u LOVE to be a caster ... Mage/Cler/War/xx

4th class is tricky.
Necro = No as a Mage Prime ur not going to order ur summons to attack
something. There is a Summon Lag that would most likey kill u before u
can blast.
Bard = Maybe u get hp,ma,mv, and ur songs can help groups.
Thief = No, because u would only get hp, mv and can't stab with mirrors.
Only Pos would be Stab, ability to see inventories, and some of the skills
that a thief would get.
Druid = Maybe, u would get ma, and very small mana regen when outside.
Only Pos would be the spells for Resists and Fluidy, and u could shift.

Sooo the 4th can either be Bard or Druid.

Yes you can say this about every class, how ever, with the older classes, you
give up more then you gain.

And Yeah -- there is no right answer.

I know; I'm not looking for the "best" character, because I know there isn't one. I just want a mage/spellcaster character that will be pretty good in groups and ok to solo some areas if I really wanted to.

So yeah, I guess I'm just going to have to pick something and roll with it.

Mage/ Cleric/ (Monk/warrior)/ (Necro/Bard)

I guess I'll come up with something. :P

Anyway, I REALLY appreciate all the input from you guys/girls. It's definately given me a lot of insight on the game.

A few thoughts:

Ma/Dr/Wa/Cl would be a pretty good soloer at higher lvls. Groups usually need blasters as well. Healing becomes a problem until you reach Cl 36(?) But if you're constantly running, that shouldn't take too long. Your major advantage will probably be your regen rates (outdoor).

Ma/Cl/Wa/? would be a pretty good soloer at higher lvls. Groups need blasters and healers, and this classo can be both, regen becomes a minor problem though. Your major advantage will probably be your 'pet rabbit.' A eudamon goes a looooong way to helping solo.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see much use of War in 3rd compare to Monk.
Counter Attack, and Passage are great skills for Monks ...
Use Mirrors, Counter Attack, Passage, walk in Curse/Damn flee. Passage
come in blast, flee, passage come in blast flee ... rinse and repeat.

MY Suggestion and this is only me. Mage/Cleric/Monk/Bard

Here are the mage classos that come to mind

Ma Dr Cl Mo - high outdoor mr and resting hpr, aegis fluidity dmg reduction, can run as mage with mirrors or use deathgrip to save mana.

Ma Dr Cl Ba - high outdoor mr, aegis fluidity, bard songs for grouping, forced to play mage style with no leading attack.

Ma Ne Cl Ba - Big followers, aegis wraithform, bard songs for followers and grouping, again forced into mage style.

Ma Ne Cl Mo - Big followers, aegis wraithform, mage style or deathgrip

I feel the power of a mage is in spellcasting, this makes warrior a bad choice for me. Bards have just as much ac gear, more mana, can sing songs, see inventorys, sneak and hide. Monks get deathgrip/deathtouch, counterattack, presage and focus which I think outdo the warrior skills. If you want to spend the time messing with corpses and doing alot of prep work necro is the way to go. Necro seems to be more beneficial to solo type players (spectral shield not included), whereas the druid classo is more of a support/group powerhouse. If you want to hop in and go Ma Dr packs alot of mana and the mr to keep you casting all day strong.

Will, will, will...
That's PRESAGE, don't confuse the newbie. :P

It's a good combo, but will a mage with mirrors need presage?

The classo I'd suggest is Ma/Dr/Cl/Ba. I'd say why, but I'm pissed because Randy Johnson seems to be melting down again. ...grrrrr.
