The sleeves of shadow and pain

Postby Gorka » Sun Nov 08, 2020 6:56 am

The sleeves of shadow and pain realizes its own nakedness and screams!
A blinding light flashes all around the sleeves and when your eyes adjust, the
sleeves are now adorned with tendrils of darkness.

You attach tendrils of darkness to the sleeves of shadow and pain.

You feel informed:

You look at the sleeves of shadow and pain and, feeling
a little foolish, you speak to it. To your surprise, the sleeves speak back.

'Master, I am at your service. I am an artifact of great power. First and
foremost, I can give you the ability to harness your healing powers for harm.
When you are wearing me, any healing spells cast on non-player creatures
will do damage instead of healing, except if the creature is protected by
by the gods. In my experience, this includes other gods and their underlings,
the angels, as they are protected from the shadow world.

Second, I extract pain from creatures when you inflict harm upon them with
any kind of healing spells. Each creature that you attack utilizes a
soul signature within my pain reserves, and that pain will remain intact
until it is released. Once my pain levels for a given soul signature has
reached a certain threshold, you will be able to unleash that energy by
cursing the creature [curse]. This attack can either initiate a battle or
can be used in the heat of battle. To check on my pain reserves for a given
soul signature, simply ponder the creature of interest.

Note that across Jord there are dozens and dozens of soul signatures, but as
a powerful artifact I am able to track them independently from each other.
The following is a list of useful commands that I honor:

ask sleeves <anything>: I will repeat this message.
look sleeves: I will report my xp and level, plus capabilities.
ponder <creature>: I will report my pain levels for the soul
signature associated with that creature.
curse <creature>: If I have enough pain, I will unleash the pain
upon the creature you specify.
offer <object> sleeves: When I am ready to level, I will require you to offer
me the specified object for me to gain level.

One final note to consider is that not all creatures have the same level of
pain. The stronger the creature, the more pain I am able to
extract. I think you will find that it is not wise to spend our time
trying to exterminate kobolds off the face of Jord to gain xp.

As you end your query, it seems to you that the sleeves are laughing to itself.

wear sleeves
I don't think so!
Tendrils of darkness is preventing you from using the item...

Something happened and the clasps didn't get approved. We will fix as soon as a creator gets on.

This has been remedied. It should work as designed now.

No they are not personal. It appears to be the intention that they are not, as they have a high coin value. Given the time it takes to level the things, it's not really a process you would want to do for all your chars. Also I suspect that the procs on these ones aren't as OP as the mage ones. So the fact they aren't personal is probably no big deal really. The first damage proc shows as "Demon Touch" on my counters, doing 200 damage. Haven't bothered to check the second damage proc, because I vaulted mine for now. My feeling so far is they are a slightly watered down version of the mage gauntlets. Although without the procs the final item stats are quite desirable still. I get the feeling these will do less damage, but can't confirm yet. I bet there is a hidden special though at level 10 which could be interesting.

What we see, but do not know, from Guinex's capture is that the message "you attach tendrils of darkness...." is an attach that auto-applies, but you have to LOOK at the item, just this very first time, to cause the clasp to auto attach.

My scenario was this: i forged with Zuzu, then went LD and came back , and didn't really think too seriously about what I was doing. -WITHOUT- first looking at the sleeves, I attached my old trusty black arm band to them, thinking that the tendrils was something i'd have to go get. I ran gold in hellwell on and off very fitfully for several hours. Each time i looked at the sleeves it still said distance to level was 1000. Maniac later set me straight by having me take the band off and doing a 'look sleeves'.
the Clasp is the bearer of the xp tracking for the artifact.

This looks like a freak accident that mostly won't ever happen again, but it is pointed out that technically they can't force you to look at the sleeves for the first time to cause the clasp spawn.

Something to think about.

While the sleeves aren't personal per se, the clasp attached to them is and non-removable. So in practice they are personal. You can see this when you vault them.

RE: Clasp Personalization...

Sloth has some big issues with personalization... I can think of a few just off the top of my head...

1) Personal objects that do not belong to the owner, can frequently be used in forges bypassing the check.
2) When you have multiple chars that share vaults, you can't move another chars personal items.
3) Given that shopkeepers in certain circumstances remove personalization from sold objects, it would not surprise me if there is an unchecked condition, allowing items to have personalization removed.
4) There are still powerful eq items sold in the drachma shop without personalization.
5) In some cases if an NPC gives you a personal item, and you are not full enough to pick it up, in rare cases the item is placed on the ground - which I suspect allows another char to claim that object as the owner.

Lastly, if it's the clasp that essentially makes the sleeves personal... and a new clasp is created when the sleeves are "feed" - it wouldn't surprise me if another character could feed the sleeves and take on the ownership. It's not something I have tried, but it's a theory that would have a strong possibility of working I suspect.

You may have also noticed that the clasp frequently show up on the eq list...and for whatever reason are still frequently falling off the sleeves and the gauntlets. I think I even saw the clasp sold in a drachma shop once. It's a mess, if the sleeves are meant to be personal through the clasp, make the sleeves personal also - at least that would block some of the exploits... and why make the clasps worth 50 drachma? Am I missing something logical here? Why are these artifacts so OP? Why is there no lag on there procs? Why can I use them in safe rooms? They have seriously undermined the game. Class balance can't be fixed through eq, even though I respect Maniac's intention of trying to do that.

Sloth is deeply flawed, unfortunately there doesn't appear to be active coders at the moment to fix these issues. The vulnerabilities that exist completely undermine the game in several key game systems. If we get another active coder at sometime, I'm happy to share what I know, but I know at the moment nothing is going to get done if I share it, and I certainly am not going to share it with unscrupulous players. What I have shared here is very small, and I bet other players out there know things probably just as large that I don't know.

I only hope the new sleeves are blocked from the coliseum and shop keepers as well? I suspect that code would be inherited from the mage gauntlets.

Sloth is going to have to drop the secrecy crap surrounding it's source code, and take on new coders if it's going to stay running, lest players learn the exploits and they become public knowledge and the games credibility is damaged beyond repair. It's in the rules that players aren't allowed to abuse bugs... but on the flip side... why would a player bother doing things the correct way, if the bugs are reported and never fixed. If those who run the game can't even respect it, why should the player respect the rules?

FWIW, your xp on your artifacts are tied to your character name, so if someone else tries to feed your artifact, the artifact will simply tell you that you don't have enough xp to level. If you happened to have enough xp to do it, you could take over someone else's artifact, but having multiple artifacts would do you absolutely no good... I made sure of that. I have no issues with making them personal, though... it was a simple oversight.

Also, you can't use them in safe rooms. If you have found some situations where that isn't true, please let me know. That's part of the same code that prevents artifacts from being used in the arena.

The only time the clasps show up on the eqlist is when reimbursements are made by the gods... clasps are autoremoved from their item in the process, which I don't like, but ok whatever. If anyone has seen other circumstances in which the clasps have fallen off, please let me know and I will do whatever I can to fix it.
