I wouldn't do away with rent completely, but it would be nice if we had some sort of cap.

It just needs the "time" component removed, or the "item value" component removed. Maybe a fixed price based on levels. 300k for rent isn't really all that bad compared to how it used to be. But the fact remains, I doubt I'll log in the next 3 weeks just so I can avoid paying it. It's definitely counter productive, it punishes the wrong players. I even have a "rent mode" for my eq to keep costs down. I think my max rent would be around 200-250k... which is pretty low really. Probably on about 5-6 occasions I've purposefully not bothered logging in for a month just because I couldn't be bothered going backwards from rent, even though the money is very quickly regained... I resent the fact the first thing I must do when I login is go backwards to go forwards, and I just don't do it. See ya in 3 weeks maybe.

I don't think it's actually really about the money in the end, more the principal about going backwards, always something I have resented in sloth.
