Ok, I'm 95% regretting going with Vista. Problem I am having is getting my DVD of files to be read. For some reason,all applications refuse to be transferred over due to it being READ ONLY blah blah blah. Now had I stuck with Windows XP..I wouldn't even be having this problem. I'm thinking maybe I need to allow security to allow files to be READ/DRAGGED over to my PC but maybe it's something else.. anyone who can point me in the right direction? I tried asking Jeeves but he pulled a drunk and I'm sitting here clueless.

Well if you only want to read the dvd once you could just get a disc-bootable linux distr and copy the files over. I'd suggest [url:31fafm0c]http://www.knoppix.org[/url:31fafm0c] if you decide to go down that route. Will make it hard to go back to Vista though.

As for Vista, you're likely right about it being some half-baked "security" measure to "protect" you from doing what you want.

Well, you "can" do that, however, even as Administrator, VISTA decides that you've made a mistake and undoes it. This is my 2nd day working with VISTA. Seems it's a widespread problem according to web searches. Seems that VISTA doesn't like anything done under XP. Might just have to re-download all APP's and burn under VISTA. Crappy that I have had this PC for less than a week and have to consider removing VISTA and looking for XP to install. Maybe Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ after all.

I've had this problem before... on xp...

I think you'll find that your "Backup DVD," what ever software you used to make the backup... set everything to be "read only" as it was copying to a read only medium.

As others have stated.. you need to undo the read only flag on your files. If your clever then open a DOS prompt and type "ATTRIB /?"

The Attrib command can recursively take the read only flag off all files in a directory. Very nice...

This worked in my situation, have some doubts it might help yours, as I'm not 100% certain of your exact problem.

Totally blows. Trying to re-download all applications then burning under Vista and seeing if I can trans files like normal or if this is a permanent thing. That being the case, to hell with Vista, I'll go about just removing it completely and installing XP. The only downside about that is that since PC was pre-installed with Vista, i've read there would probably be some problems concerning hardware conflicts. Weasel is right on this... stay the %#$$$# away from Vista. You'll thank me for it.

tried several things Jezer, Vista resets to read-only no matter what you do. I even went thru control panel and toggled off AUC and that didn't help. Basically, Vista will only drag files off a cd/dvd that isn't an application type. It's not the burner I used because whenever I restored my harddrive on my old PC, I could just load up a DVD of files and it would automatically drag everything over no problem... also could do the same thing on PC at work that ran XP. It's Vista and it's bullshit...if anyone tells you Vista rocks, feel free to punch them in the throat. I can't believe I got suckered into this crap.

I feel your pain. I was the first person in my company to receive Vista on a trial basis. I soon found out that Vista did not support Microsoft Visual Studio 2003... that's right... Microsoft Vista does not support Microsoft's own products... I was told I would have to upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005... at my own expensive... needless to say... I wiped and put on xp

^%#@$$! Vista - Part 2

Well..it seems I am screwed on this deal. The only way I can see out of this mess is to re-download every single program/application .exe file and burn thru Vista....then it will do like it should. It's just f'd that XP will read Vista but Vista won't read XP. Talk about progress. I can only guess what Windows 7 will be like. Probably a good idea to buy a PC with XP on it before the end of the year...that will hopefully last me 10 years.

use vistas disk management to shrink the current partition and make a new one. install a good version of linux now and learn to love it.

Then if you really wanna piss w/ the world install xp in a virtal machine inside your linux box.

or if you really just want your stuff to work, use pcmover to migrate all your programs and registry settings to your new machine.
