So stoked! Finally switched from DSL (3mbps d/l, 780kbps u/l) to cable today - currently running just under 15mbps d/l and 1.9 u/l, but the added dedicated boost pipe kicks in within the next 48hours and then I should be hitting up to 30mbps d/l and 5mbps u/l! This is awesome after DSL!!

Wow and some countries have 100mbps d/l apparently.. insane!

gratz on the bandwidth, its prob the best it will ever be. As soon others in your neighborhood start hooking up it will start dropping as cable is shared between everyone at the box. I would personally kill for 3Mbps dsl but alas Im stuck on 512 wireless until I move or die.

First modem I used was a 600 baud to connect to the mainframe at the local college. The mainframe was running an old unix based MUSIC system

modem memories

Postby Avatar » Mon Mar 24, 2008 2:35 pm

Yeah, I'm old. We purchased our first modems as a pair, and initially only used them to 'network' two computers with null-modem cables. 300 baud baby! I win!

"Modems: Many external modems worked perfectly with the CoCo 2 and 3. As far as cartridge modems go, the Direct Connect Modem Pak was a 300 baud modem designed for the CoCo."

The computes were the Radio Shack / Tandy Color Computer (CoCo) TRS-80. We eventually had four of these, and a lot of accessories.

Still, that wasn't even the first computer our family had when I was growing up. We had a Timex Sinclair 1000...2k RAM! We did eventually get the 16k memory add-on pack. I still have the cassette player we used to save programs, somewhere.

while we're on the subject

anyone remember the good old days of dialup chats?

[url:31f8au67]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diversi-Dial[/url:31f8au67]

6 300bps modems plugged into an AppleIIe, dialing in with my old Hayes external 2400baud.... good times :)

I used to run an old Renegade BBS too, another buddy ran a Wildcat setup... good times, good times
Don't be stupid - we have politicians for that

i owned a Sinclair too, based on Z80A processor, made in USSR and it's name was '******'
i was really proud about that Z80A, didn't knew what that 'A' means, but all my friends owned puters with Z80 and were envy me
then some guys were developing 'Scorpion' - Sinclair, but with extended features, like HDD, 128k RAM and floppy drive
sadly, their work had no future because PC conquered all
~4..5 years ago i stumbled upon an Z80 emulator, it was a graduate degree work of some sort of, made by a guy from Montenegro while there was a war
he wrote in readme.txt about the work goes slowly, no electricity etc and he was powering his computer from diesel generator

PS. no idea why there's a stars replacing the name, but it was 'S.p.a.r.k.' (w/o points)
