games that make me want to hurl

Postby Weasel » Tue Oct 04, 2005 10:52 am

Does anyone else here experience nausea when playing FPS (first person shooter graphics engine) games? I bought VietCong a year or two ago but had to stop playing as I'd start feeling sick after an hour (or less) of play. Yesterday I got a copy of FarCry for free with some RAM boards, and although it's a pretty damn kewl game, I was close to hurling after only about 20 minutes of play. It took a little while for the cold sweats to dissipate and the color to return to my face, but the nausea stayed with me for hours (although slowly decreasing). Apparently it's some form of motion sickness (which is something I don't usually suffer from) caused by the realism factor in gun-sway and head-bob etc. Anyone know how to 'de-hurl' these games?

It's been known to happen to folks that play Doom, Half Life 2 and other swaying and/or realism type games. Happened to theaters full of people during the Blair Witch Project. Nintendo even has warnings on some games saying they may cause nausea in addition to epilepsy and whatnot.

Some games have settings that allow you to shut that kind of motion off. Other than that, I can only recommend meds :)

Motion sickness

Postby Avatar » Tue Oct 04, 2005 3:34 pm

For me, it was worst with an old racing game called F-Zero on the SNES. I'd play that game for 20 minutes and have the worst symptoms. Most first-person shooters don't affect me (thankfully) though I did notice more mild symptoms from Fable on the XBOX.

My understanding is that basic motion sickness comes from the different signals you get from your eyes vs. your actual motion. So, in a car your body is swaying to the car and it feels like you are moving. If you read in a car, your eyes are fixed on this book and don't send the same signals that you're moving. Video games are similar, where visually you see movement but the rest of your mind doesn't feel movement. (I suppose that's based on the sense of motion you get from the eardrums?)

For myself, typically if I'm playing a racing game I'll try to often look away from the screen and focus on something static in the room. Often the loading screen before levels is enough for me to prevent symptoms. Oddly, my brother makes fun of me sometimes but when playing the FPS games I'll be moving my head when I peek around corners or jump, etc. That might help, I suppose, though I didn't in the past do it intentionally.

Doom was the worse

I loved playing that game but oddly, if I played on an empty stomach I would
get sick at my stomach and have to change games...something really cool I found is to play your FPS while standing. I have a 54' big screen and it seems that standing and 'moving' a little makes playing more fun with no side-sickening feeling.
