I guess my mental pic for some players is the overweight twenty something wearing a black death metal t-shirt hanging out with the fat chicks at some no name concert. If that's you... you won't like this...

This guy has soul... sings each song like it's his last, a lament of his last minutes on earth. Magic.

Too depressing for me sorry. Sounds like he's spent a few years under a whiskey bottle with that husky voice. As far as that genre goes, I prefer the likes of James Taylor or some Cat Stevens (albeit a couple of decades earlier).

Anyone play Guild Wars?

Postby Weasel » Sun Apr 26, 2009 1:14 pm

Anyone here play Guild Wars? Would appreciate any views on it - I'm considering getting Trilogy (includes Guild Wars, Guild Wars Factions, and Guild Wars Nightfall).. the fact it has no subscription fee is a [b:31hmsnq0]big[/b:31hmsnq0] plus for me..

Got my new PC up and running sweet; Vista 64-bit, i7-920 now clocked and very stable at 3.8GHz, 6GB RAM @ 1600MHz, and a GTX 285 SSC factory clocked to 702.. Crysis runs on full without a problem.. but Crysis gives me slight motion sickness after a while which isn't much fun.

Guild wars is alright and I reckon it will be fun. The no subscription fees is indeed a bonus. Anyhow you will be quick to find annoying and rude kids on there within your first hour ;)

If Crysis gives you motion sickness, you should not even look at Mirrors Edge.

P.S. Nice Rig! EVGA makes very decent cards! What kind of mobo you powering this beast with? Prolly an ASUS I reckon.

Yeah unfortunately that seems to happen everywhere.. little buggers. I'll just have to pkill them I guess.

I looked at the trailer for Mirrors Edge, and first thing I thought was that I'd be talking to the seals in no time, LOL...

Nope, not an ASUS. Mobo is EVGA X58 3xSLI (although I only have a single GTX 285 SSC in there..[i:su124kzz] so far[/i:su124kzz] ). Latest BIOS seems pretty good.
Using a CoolerMaster V8 CPU cooler and the CoolerMaster Storm Sniper SGC case (need it to fit the V8 in!).
Corsair 850TX PSU
RAM is 3 x 2GB OCZ platinums (rated 1600MHz 7-7-7-24) with one of those Corsair RAM fans mounted over them.
300GB Velociraptor (boots from it), and additional 640GB Caviar Black HD for data and some of the games.
Ran just shy of P16000 on 3DMarkVantage performance full test, which is sweet for a single graphics card setup.
Oh, X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card.

Replacing the internal V8 stock 70CFM fan as it seems to rattle a bit at high RPM.. the replacement I'm dropping in pushes about 110CFM, so that should drop the CPU temp quite a bit too.. maybe clock it up to 4.0GHz? Could do that now, but want to keep it relatively 'safe'. Adding a couple of high CFM case fans too - will end up with a 200mm 140CFM and a 120mm 96CFM intake fans, and the same again for exhaust... will be a regular wind tunnel going through my case heh..

It leaves my old PC for dead.. a Dell Dimension 4600 (Pentium4, 2.66GHz) with 3GB RAM and a Radeon 512MB Xtasy X1300, which actually did a pretty decent job for what it was, but it couldn't cope with many of the newer games coming out... or it at least tried, but badly. Given it to my g/f's mother, as it's way more than adequate for her needs.

Yeah the EVGA motherboards are fine too, but here's the thing, SLI-ing 3x GTX 285 is not worth the dough. With what, a 10% boost that is not visible to the naked eye, but prolly distinguishable on 3D MARK.

THE V8 IS HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! It's almost impossible to find a case that could fit it, especially if your case comes with a monster 250mm FAN. The RAM Fans you speak off are the Corsair Dominator Coolers.

Nice HD, crazy speed. although I'd prolly get an additional 640gb and RAID it. Not a big fan of sound cards, always happy with on board stuff, so yeah.

Overclocking is the way to go! Clock it hard and clock it fast. i7's are meant for pushing the limit. The thing with additional fans are the additional noise, but then again the bigger the fan, the higher the CFM at a lower RPM but finding space for it is the problem.

Enjoy your rig!

Yeah three of them is prob a bit over the top, and more than I need - heck, Crysis runs fine on high settings with just the one card. When the prices drop some, I might add one more, but that would be all.

LOL yeah the V8 is massive.. looks sweet too. Replaced the fan inside it a couple of hours ago - much quieter now, and way more airflow. The Sniper case is one of the few that can handle it with headroom to spare.. it's 21.7" high, 10" wide, and 22.3" deep.. and they call it a mid-tower!! It's bigger than most full towers..

[img:3noo2rav]http://xtreview.com/images/Cooler%20master%20storm%20sniper%2001.jpg[/img:3noo2rav]

Looks a bit like a big air conditioner hehe. The big knob on the top front controls the speed of all the case fans, which is pretty neat, plus the inside of the knob is actually a press button which switches all the case lights on/off (the 200mm fans have blue LEDs in them, and I've got a couple of 12" blue cold cathode rods to put in there too, since I got them for free. I keep the lights off most of the time though.

I should really take some photos of it. The inside of the case is unpainted metal which is ok, but I might spray it all black to match the outside later.

Dropped the clock down to 3.6GHz today to keep the temps down.. when I did the 3.8GHz clock last week it was about mid 40s (F) here.. this week we've had mid to high 80's last 3-4 days and it's pushed up the core temps quite a bit.

Sorry, going on a bit about it I guess.. my first ever build and first proper overclock, so it's all still a novelty for me.

Don't worry, if and/or when the novelty runs out, you can upgrade to water cooling!

If the novelty of that ends, there's phase change, peltiers, thermoelectric, etc etc.

And when that ends (together with all the cash in your wallet), you could try venturing into liquid nitrogen. To prove the the triumph of lunacy over sanity, get liquid helium.

Looking forward to the pics and the pre/post mod shots.
