Mosaix has the best plan, hands down. I subscribe to it myself. Pthieves are still annoying. I'll use an example that Blackguard can easily confirm.
Spellbooks cost a lot to rent, so I tend to hold them when I have something that might be hard to find again. I used to have a JJD that I would remove to do this. I was tired one night, but noticed the mud had been up for a while, so I figured I'd run the shops quick and stock up on some newbie eq and spellbooks and then rent again. I made it all the way to the Auction House when one of Derro's alts reminded me that I could be pushed and that I had a JJD in inventory. He rented the thief immediately, so there was pretty much nothing I was going to do about it.
At first, I wasn't overly worried about it. Annoyed slightly that I wasn't going to rent, but not really bothered. I offered to buy it back. He told me it wasn't a problem, just give him 4 mils. Considering that I was (still am) about 2cps from forging another JJD for free, I wasn't going for it. I told him a max of 2. Then he did a very stupid thing and rented.
First reason this was stupid: It annoyed me. I was still logged on and was in slightly worse shape than when I got there. I was annoyed that I didn't have the coins, and cycling a couple mils just to give it to a greedy thief didn't sit well with me. And best, he wasn't logged on, so there wasn't much I was going to be able to do to get it back anytime soon.
Second reason this was stupid: It took me about 2 hours to realise that I don't need the thing. I simply replaced it and have moved on rather handily. So, he basically screwed himself out of the offer I did give him. I now also have a perm Valker, which is something I have always wanted, but never gotten around to actually making.
I've seen many others get annoyed for basically similar circumstances. They're good about watching for thieves, but let their guard down for something like a raise, or change eq in a scribe's shop they thought was safe and get jacked. It's annoying, and even more so when you know it's avoidable.
Spreading annoyance is bad karma. I'm fortunate that I didn't lose anything that mattered, but the annoyance it caused isn't something that I'd wish on others. And it have a very logical and definable source. Derro. Poolp. Harlot.
They spread annoyance and chase people from the game for petty reasons. Nothing they do matters unless it's negative. Poolp I will give a margin of credit, because even though I find him annoying, he's got a margin of honor and honesty that I appreciate. He's still annoying.
So, please, take Mosaix' advice. I think the game would be better without them, but there's currently not much that can be done about them except to try to cause them as much annoyance as they cause themselves. Karma and all. It quite likely won't bother them, but it can be fun to try.
