I rather think a necro bard warrior is a cool idea. I think of a Lord Soth, singing with some banshees all night, cursed to relive those moments of his downfall. He also has some death knight followers (see the painting "lord soth's charge"). I can see him singing 'gods of war' to motivate his knights. Even further, some of the newer D20 rules let you use bard abilities with other perform skills like dance, poetry, etc. A death knight giving a rousing speech to motivate an army of undead (rather like braveheart)...well, it just rocks.
So, my plan for an undead Warrior/Bard/Necro/Cleric doesn't really fit the general ideas for Bards...I can accept that. I've also played a Cl/Th here and a Th/Cl, which doesn't fit most people's ideas of clerics (or thieves). To me, that's one more Advantage of Sloth, with a capital A. I guess those Cl/Th characters are one reason I dislike our alignment system so much.
I guess my personal vision of a Bard prime is rather like "Taliesin" from the Stephen Lawhead books. He's a strong character, in a great set of books. A lot of the Arthurian knights could be considered Warrior/Bard mixes, but I prefer the more celtic view of the Bard. That's another reason I love the classic Minstrel classo so much (though I haven't made a copy yet)...Bard, Druid, and Necro all fit so well into a celtic story.
