[quote="jezer":25v1xnzz]It's kind of ironic how these things have happened of late... I remember when Princess Diana died Mother Teresa died around the same time. 1000's turned up to Diana's funeral... but millions turned up to Mother Teresa's.

Recently Sir Edmund Hillary died, he spent his life doing charitable works in Nepal with the poor and the suppressed... and then Heath Ledger dies in what looks to be a drug related death. Millions may have heard about Heath Ledgers death, but many more, actually feel like they owe something to Sir Edmund Hillary.

It puts a few things in perspective.

Some die living for themselves and we remember it as tragic... some die doing things for others and we remember them as heroes.[/quote:25v1xnzz]

Jezer, I had a beef about that issue in the news when Di got all the press and Mother Teresa seemed to be nothing more than a blip on the spin machine. I'm seeing the same thing with Sir Edmund Hillary, lots of American glitz and glam for Ledger and not a single follow up story about Hillary. It's damn hard to find good news.

accidental death?

Postby Avatar » Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:51 pm

It seems like none of the tests show far indicate purposeful drug abuse. It's worth it to remember sometimes that people die from accidental deaths, and it may not be suicide at all.

A week or so ago an older lady in Michigan City died in her sleep, froze to death. The thermostat was turned all the way down, but the utilities were all connected, the pilot light was on. Police said the toilet water was frozen solid, and the windows were iced on the inside. Just an accidental death, no indications that she intended to kill herself.

Given the way utility companies are fleecing the public, those types of deaths are going to happen more often. The woman most likely couldnt afford the heating bill on social security income.

In Baltimore/Maryland electricity rates by June 2008 will have gone up 75.5% in the last 2 years. 70% hike last year, 5.5% this coming June. I set my thermostat to 50 degrees, and use energy efficent everything throught my 1200 sq/ft interior townhome. Sealed windows, you name it ive done it. My winter bills are still $300-400 a month minimum.

Its really sad, that elderly americans who have worked all their lives are rewarded by freezing to death in their own homes, so fat wealthy energy companies can maximize profits.

Exxon is about to post record profits once again................................

You should have seen what it was like over here when Sir Edmund Hillary died, it was on the news (not to mention the tributes) every day between the day he died and the day of his state funeral.

Of course "over here" is close enough that I saw his body lying in state and watched the funeral procession, so I guess we're biased.

I'll start by saying I know nothing of the guy and very little of the circumstances of his death, only what I heard on the news, but I did find it very telling that on the day it was announced the number one search on google was 'heath ledger' shows many people knew of him felt connected to him in some way and cared about his death .... oh and the number two search on google was for 'keith ledger' ...

I'm not sure what your point was but on a point of information about when Diana died. In this country millions lined the streets and the country came to a standstill, the funeral was the most watched event and the death the most reported news item of the decade far outstipping the death of anyone else including Mother Teresa by a long way. 10 years on and making even a tasteful joke about it (if there is such a thing) can ruin a comedians career, saying that you think Diana was less than perfect can be social suicide and the enquiry into her death still makes top billing on the news.

Now I'm not sure what my point is, perhaps its that we care more about how beautiful people are than how good they are ... or perhaps that media hype can snowball and sometimes it sticks

I made a mistake blurring my point talking about the sizes of funerals... but I was basically saying, the media seem to pay more attention to "tragic" deaths then they do true heroes who rose from nothing, died with nothing but lived a life helping others. At least Widow got it! :)
