I think Melanthe said it best when he said he was on his way to +30 damage. Considering that he's barely avatar... well, let me do the math this way:
Monks have counterattack, which doesn't kill an attack to use (like parry) AND hits the mob back for a bunch of damage. Between counter, 2x attacks, and strike (3x damage), that's about 6 attacks a round. Strike and counter only hit about half the time, so call it 4. +30 damage. That's 120 additional damage a round. Compare to thieves... The high tard thieves have what? +24-5 damage and 2 attacks? Not to mention that circle forces the use of a smaller weapon... never mind that normal handdam compares with warrior style weapons (I still don't bother using a weapon).
Compare to warriors... 3x attacks and whatever damage they can squeeze in around AC gear. And it's a hell of a lot easier to squeeze in the +handdam when you're getting it +2, +3 or +5 a pop instead of +1.
As far as sucking, I took the hit to the thunder gaunts and my character is still getting 4x brutal attacks a round, countering and striking. Granted, that's using berserk

And Splork is still a little mythed that I only use my quest sword to deathblow...
Your definition of underpowered is lacking... You have a cap of 5 mil on Lyme regardless of the day.
