Whifting

Postby jezer » Mon Sep 29, 2008 9:43 pm

So yesterday... I was up in tabaxi and the tabaxi lord had just popped his item of awesomeness.

Shift piasa, chop, chop, chop, flee, heal, shift... Everything was going marvellous... Mob was on pretty hurt and I had about 250 mana left to finish him off.

I flee like a coward...
unshift...
heal... loss con... ok, no biggie...
heal... back to full health
shapeshift piasa... body shudders nothing happens...
shapeshift piasa... body shudders nothing happens...
END OF RUN (No Mana left to shift)...

So I, recalled, complained about lost con etc... Get the usual responses... insert clink joke... etc. Ok, it happens to all of us...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve started to get superstitious about shifting... because I’ve noticed (and I only wish I had been keeping stats)... when the first shift whiffs (a whift)... it’s about 50/50 that the second one whiffs also.

Now I know there is probably nothing in the code that causes that... but it all comes back to that silly supposedly “random” number generator again! Does it use the time by any chance to generate the number? There seems to be no lag associated when I “whift” so often I just press enter to try to shift again straight away... all too often I whift again.

Ok that’s just silly you say... well is it? I recall days, when an extraordinary about of newbie’s roll there stats. There are both good and bad days with lost con... and we would mainly notice the bad. It’s also often said that if you are rolling bad, wait a few minutes and try again... Why is it do you think that we have this PERCEPTION that there isn’t much variance on average in the random numbers over a given period? Especially when Jake comes out and says, every one complains about lost con, every couple of years when we go through that real bad patch.

Why is it, whiffs so often come in twos? I have little doubt that the numbers are random... but they seem to be clumped... that is to say... [b:2gitm9st]there seems to be a high percentage chance that two random numbers in succession will not have much variance.[/b:2gitm9st]

Such a thing could happen, if the random number generator uses the time as a seed or a part of the equation, it’s quite possible then that the interval could play a part... but that’s just hearsay I guess.

But you all know what I’m saying... why the heck is there patterns in our random numbers!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So I have 3 ideas that (nice ) immortals might consider...

• Make the chances of a second whiff casting spells lower, or a magic user skill...
• Make whifting a shift half the mana cost like losing con... a whift is full price currently.
• In the situation in a group when the tank says lite me, and 5 people do at once... why can’t you make it so everyone doesn’t lose mana for trying to be nice...

I don't think our perception is wrong when we perceive lost con happens to much, or out of average in a day... even though mathematically we can't prove it's pattern. I thinking it's the timing of when it happens that adds to this... and evening the lost con out, by reducing chances of second consecutive whiffs could end the problem.

I guess one is far more likely to remember a day where they loose con twice in a row 3 times, than the day they loose it 10 times, but never consecutive.

Or Wait 10 seconds before you try to shift again after you fail.

That first one would take all the fun out of lost conc. Doubt it would fly.

2nd one seems a reasonable suggestion

3rd one is laughable, altho it'd be nice if you could cast over spells, resetting their duration, instead of just failing and losing the mana
Talk to the clown.

I usually have someone good in the group who I don't need to tell to light me so I don't even worry about it. My job as a warrior is to bleed and die, I let someone else do the thinking.

Don't use lite and you'll make your job faster.

Judge has changed it so whifts are now only half of the mana cost... bringing it in line with how the rest of the game works with lost concentration.

Thanks Judge. I was going to write a glowing and longer paragraph about your awesomeness but I lost concentration  He reckons he doesn't read the forum anyways....

Anyways... onwards and upwards... I have to say, my lists of complaints/bugs is all but gone, with all the new changes and bug fixes to druid... I know some of the changes were crashing the mud of late, and some of those were because of me shifting...... but it was up for 2.5days before yesterdays shutdown... looking good!

I witnessed judge shape shifting into various forms without shift returning the other day. He seemed to suggest it with go into the game in time... I'm scratching my head about how useful this might be... and whether if I shifted from piasa to tree, would that be like a disengage... I'm sure it will be lots of fun in any case.

The epic system has a way to go with no honor for shifted player bugs. I killed a few raiders last week and got nothing. Hope Akasha can get around to looking at those soon.

A few more prime druids on of late! I guess since the primes have been strengthened a little, it has made prime druid a firm alternative to some of the other strong prime classes... maybe we can even get weasel to make one... although you could argue he was perma shift all along... Warriors suck Weasel, deal with it! :D Cross over!

Funny you should say that - I created a couple of thief prime noobs just recently as it happens.. just in time for them to be nerfed? LOL. Rolling stats sucks though...

I'm pretty sure you'd like druid... like I used to play monks... and I thought, oh yeah this is my style etc, nothing will ever change. I crossed over and not really looked back. Honestly, after putting up with your sucky regen as a warrior... playing a tard druid would be like a "sweet day as a warrior" every day. You also still get to do your warrior stuffs, shift piasa, chop chop. Even regen is awesome, you brag about your max mana, and regen stats... to your captive groupies. Make sure you set triggers to announce how quickly you are full, just to rub it in

Like, last time you played, all do did was itch, scratch and sniff the people coming past, swim in your decanter, puke up your stomach and return to eat it later... you barely left Magnolia! You need a sea change.
