well, i've been tracking my stabs, i seem to hit about 82% of the time (out of about 1000 stabs) at +20 hit. I haven't tested that much with lower hit, i ran at +18 for a little while and hit about 81% but that was only out of maybe 3-400 stabs.

11 misses from about 81 attacks... A hit rate of 86% with +30 to hit... what is the point of +hit? Seems like it does nothing at all. 85% should be the hit rate of a plain skill without all this +hit business!

I've poked 9304 holes in mobs and nearly lost 1510 fingers.

86%. those are mostly all at +27 to hit and i started keepin track after the
changes to +hit went in. and when you factor in all the misses on that darn third stab, which almost always miss when solo it's really a pretty high rate of stabs. also on that note:

Years ago, I tested stab results by running a thief prime and collecting numbers for awhile. My plan was to run with minimum to-hit bonus, collect numbers, then wear as much to-hit as I could find and collect numbers. It's important to select your test mobs carefully. If you're currently hitting all the time (no misses due to target AC) then improving your to-hit bonus wouldn't show any change.

My tests were done long before the new classes were introduced, I had a 40-30 thief-mage. Warrior must have been in the teens, so I probably didn't have much inherent to-hit based on classes. I found a set of 4 mobs that I hit/missed in normal battle about 50% of the time. I ran that set of mobs and collected stab numbers just for those 4 mobs for 100 runs. After that, I changed eq to wear an additional +11 to-hit. I collected stab numbers for another 100 runs.

I don't have any of the original data to share, but the end result was "no difference". Of course, this was years ago and much of the code may have changed since. In summary, I myself wouldn't drop damage or AC for any additional to-hit. In my experience, to-hit bonuses don't affect stab rates. I don't have a thief prime anymore, but I'd be interested to see similar numbers from anyone else.

alberich. i posted the pop mob on the chasm eq thread but forgot to add it
to this thread. it pops on the druid mercs near entrance.

avatar. up until a few months ago i would have totally agreed. +hit had no affect on stab rate at all. but then they changed the code on stab to
take +hit into affect. like some of the other thieves posted, in the low +20's they hit low to mid 80%. it's a given you shouldn't give up dmg, but
dropping some ac is generally worth it at the higher lvls. i know most thieves plan on splorking the mob anyway, so who cares about ac!!
