Swim vs. twiddle

Postby Shazuko » Tue Sep 25, 2007 11:18 am

how about it...I've been thinking about it for a while...

I don't care if it takes the same time as a boat ride, its the WAITING for a boat to show up that makes me want to jam a hot poker in my eye...the swim itself can be the same length as the boat ride, or maybe even a tick longer since people dont swim as fast, but it would still be a bit shorter than waiting for a boat that just left, or you just missed as you type 'enter'...

you make your swim check by typing <swim continent>; if you fail and fall in the water, you type 'climb pier' (or its equivelent) to get out of the water and start over, before you start drowning...it would make a great warrior skill, and possibly a druid and thief (remember the excr blow auto)...
my .666 cents...

Borrow a friend with a nightmare, thunderbird, or a genie bottle....

Use the boat and twiddle your thumbs for eternity.

If I wanted to do all that, I wouldn't have suggested it! Of course, those with reloc won't need it...!
------------------------------------
If I'm not mistaken, the longest boat ride is about 5 ticks, which equates to 5 hours...by oceanic standards, thats not far at all..you wouldn't get past the bahamas or maybe jamaica in 5 hrs...
people have swam in the ocean for days due to shipwreck etc, and traveled hundreds of miles, and if not for getting disoriented(which can happen out there), would have most likely reached land of some sort (not barring sharks, etc.)...
sloth continents are not so far apart that it isnt feasible and with a good telescope, you could probably see the edge of one while standing on the edge of another...
Also, our medieval chars are far more capable then our modern counterparts, and swimming in the ocean a few hours is quite plausible.

Do you know all non-restricted continents have trans continental portals.
And Lyme too as I can remember. Just try to find it and figure out how to use it.

thats actually a good point..I thought about that and all I've got for a rebuttle are the following:

#1)
In most mythoi(including d&d), when an item becomes enchanted, it
automatically doubles in material strength, and loses 50% of its
natural weight due to the enchantment, making them lighter then their
mundane counterparts...(which is how a bony wizard can wield an
enchanted 2 handed long sword)

#2)
Our char str scores go way, way beyond the modern norm..most
people today have an avg str of 12-14, with those in above avg shape hitting maybe 15-16+, with those few power lifters/strongest man hitting
possibly 17-18, to _maybe_ 18/10...ogre power is 18/100; ogres can
carry 400lb eq like the avg person wears jeans and a tshirt, without
breaking a sweat; if your str is even close to that, your gonna be able
to do far more physically than anyone today...even more than those guys
in the strongest man competitions...few, if any, of those guys comes close to an 18/100 str...

thats all I've got....oh well...

we already have supps that act as boats, relo charms, lots of fargate days, genie bottles, trans-continent portals in some areas, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting because it's new.
This hardly seems necessary.
Don't be stupid - we have politicians for that

There's also a spell/skill (if you do the forge for the books to learn it) to make the boats go faster too, once you're on it.

A suggestion (if you just missed the boat) is to start killing anything worthwhile nearby while you're waiting, then you can regen on the way to the other continent, that way you're not just sitting around on the docks playing with yourself... or you can fish.

We could add mamelukes (in the Tove Jansson sense) to the possible things you catch; they just break the line, unless you have forged the Fishing Line of the Gods, in which case you still can't reel them in but they tow the boat to the next port (or, anyway, some port) immediately. This destroys the boat; it will however be rebuilt in time for the next scheduled departure.
