I played since 92, got wiped several times when it was just sloth at utexas when they did the player wipes (several times). I played or had an immort as Krom or Balrog most of the way through. I had quit for about 5 years until maybe 5-6 months ago when i came back, Krom doesnt do much besides some basic admin, but I do play a good amount.

I met the FIU group, even went out with you guys to some rave-like club where I nearly picked up some chick dancing, damn cant remember the place but it was in ft.lauderdale I think. george had the older gf, i remember we went to eat somewhere...lol.

I met and hung out with blastard (black & tans baby!), met alana, argent, blush, and hung out with ripple when we going to school at UF.

Of course there was our old cornell group grom Sloth I, mac/life/dream (back when multiplaying was the way to go), bree (now jardin and bree plays every so often), lorak (now karna and elwyn and others)

I met and also kinda went out with sipha (jen) for a while.

I also met turbo (al), we hung out some while I was in PA

Many of the others I am sure I am forgetting, and many more who I feel like i know because we spent so much time together.

Krom/Balrog (Erik)

I played this MUD far too much when I was a student at UT (University of Texas). I think when I started you could only log into it if you were at one of the crappy terminals that plugged into the VAX or SUN machines at UT in 1991 or 1992. It wasn't exactly public for awhile.

My main character was feyd, but I think I had to remake him once or twice. I wish I could remember my alts names, but that was 15 years ago.

I know half of that (now demolished) dumb terminal lab would be filled with people playing MUDs back then, so I know I can't be the only old timer coming around here getting nostalgic.

I've tried to play again a few times, but I only do it for a few days. When Everquest came out it was a dream come true, it was truly modeled after MUDs, and since then I never looked back.

Anyways, it's neat to see the old sloth is still around, albeit greatly changed.

Cheers!

Hmm, I started back in late 1992 or early 1993. Played several small chars Blackwidow, Riverwind, Spawn (shared) and someone else I forget who. God knows how many times I've quit and stayed away a couple years only to come back and find Sloth still around. I remember well the day that Strider hit 4x40 for the first time.

Came back for Sloth3 as Myst, Lestat, Xandora, and several dozen others. Never could get the urge to go all the way to 5x40, so I just immorted and built 1/2 dozen areas and remodelled several more. Think the most fun I ever had were in the groups I lead for 5, 6 and 7 hour stretches. Sometimes I wish I had my zmud setup of today back in those days when I had time to play hardcore, so much fun could have been had by all.

So 14 or 15 years invested in this place. Sadly I've only ever met Rujo face to face (not sad that I met him :P just sad he's the only one I've ever met).

Hopefully I can spit out a couple more areas before me or this MUD is laid to rest. Be on the lookout ;)

Dunno who, if anyone remembers me from way back when, but I ran around on Sloth I quite a bit back in late 92 thru mid 93. I had Swampman back then and ran around with a couple quys called Cannon and Marauder. We all were from Se Missouri State Univ and played on one of those crappy terminals hooked into an Ancient MUSIC system.

Looking at this thread and thinking for a minute, I guess the old saying that fads come and go but classics stand the test of time really applies to Sloth.

Played as Bayder in SII. Went to Pittsburgh in 1994 (I think) and met several mudders (Wemic, Fred hehe Bagos et al)... Also met 4 guys that lived in Chicago but don't remember their names. I remember Wedge was on of the char names. There was also someone from Missouri. Maybe Rob (Memnock (Tigris)) remembers who they were. I say a char named Cid but the Cid from SII may have been different.

Old Timers

Postby Avatar » Sun Mar 18, 2007 10:41 am

I played in '92, like most of us I guess. Everyone was going to college, meeting new people, etc. We had a pretty good group playing from Purdue, staying up all night - all weekend at the Math building. We'd mud and print pictures to the big laser printers, then pic up a folder at the end of the morning with all our pics of cars / girls / whatever. I guess that's when I learned to mix sloth with alcohol, too. If I remember, I had an old 386 PC when I went to campus as a Freshman. I was online, and trying to find a multiplayer version of Moria/Angband when I found a text file mudlist. I had about 6 of us playing Sloth before the end of the year. Memnock (Tigris) was great, we'd have to log onto Sloth and recall him so he'd come to eat with us before the cafeteria closed for dinner. He had a dumb-terminal connected in his room somehow. Another friend had a 486 laptop with a new (faster!) modem. It was probably 33.6, I think my modem was 18.whatever. Makes the head hurt to think that far back.

Watching the text click by while ElSol runs the planes with like 15-too-many people.
