Teaching

Postby *Splork* » Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:02 pm

I'd like to get everyone's initial reaction to teaching...

Do you like it?

Will it help with the problem of constant spellbook popping?

Is it too easy?

How can we improve it?

Enjoy,

I like the who teaching gig. If you have a pendulum/shard/relocation it is fairly easy to find your focus point, if you don't have those your sol or its gonna take you a while. And yes i think it helps quite a bit with popping sbs.

One question is can you teach drachma sbs?

First of all, Kudos to the immortal staff for the introduction of this new skill.

The most difficult part of using the skill is the fact that the peristrata must be used. At times, this is all but painful to find. Especially when the peristrata happens to be in a room with an aggro mob, or a highly aggro area. With the requirement of finding shards to find the peristrata, this kind of is just as much of a pain as just cycling the spellbook twice. I'm not sure that the peristrata should be used as the only room that "teaching" should be allowed. My thought would be any reroll chamber. This would allow the use of the skill by valkers as well.

I think it would be real cool if the teacher were able to teach to a group of players and not to just one at a time. Maybe each spellbook in the teachers inventory could teach up to 3 players at a time. I can just see Shyla sitting in the Meditation Chamber teaching groups of newbies spells.

As one of the players that have been taught a spell already, I do think it is very nice addition and hope to see more of this kind of thing in the future.

I used the peristratum because it adds a little bit of challenge and questing to the skill. The fact is, it only takes 1 person to find the point. Then the rest of the mud benefits. Having a fixed room is way too easy.

Teaching is not supposed to replace the need to pop two spellbooks but to give an option other than popping both.

Shards should not be a problem. If players are unwilling to share shards for the betterment of the mud and its players... than tough luck:twisted:
However, I am loading shards into other areas...

Enjoy,

It's a really interesting addition and saves us the misery of having to pop the same mob twice. Is there a way to make the peristratum not appear in a no-magic room?

For some of the lowby spells though, I almost wonder if the spellbook pops should be removed in favor of quests as they are added.

Most folks will just skip the quests and wait until the needed spellbook happens to be sitting in a pile at the scribe.

P.S. Can I have a drach reward for the spellbook quest submission I gave that KJ implemented? :)
Talk to the clown.

Unless the spellbook quests can be done more than once, it's probably best to keep the normal pops. I did the sactuary book one and it's a cool quest, less annoying than actually popping (game had just rebooted) and for someone who's familiar with the old school newbie areas, pretty simple.

I only got 2 books though, and my int sucked. So I had to go find a third book anyway. Was still a coolish quest though

That a new change? worked fine for me the other day.

I really like the Teaching system. It can even be fun having the peristrata at an aggro mob, or in an aggro area (just had Shyla teach me one where it was at Gorgess in River of Blood, had to get a bard to put her to sleep to sing, was fun to have to work it out).

The extra effort to find/complete the teaching was well worth not having to get another restoration book.

Very great skill, keep up the good work :)
