[SlothMUD III] [Microsoft Humor] [Yahoo] [Slashdot] [LinuxToday] [LinuxApps]
Welcome... I hope you find something interesting.

About Me:

I'm Brian Hayward, I currently work as a Systems Analyst for Sprint Nextel. I am married to the wonderful Julie Anne Hayward. On January 9, 2002 we had our first child Jacob Dennis Hayward. October 30, 2005, our second child Andrew Gordon Hayward was born.

My day job is development related. I currently design an integration layer between disparate systems. This involves developing web services, SQL and schema. Though I'm immersed in technology at work, I can't seem to stay away from it at home either. There aren't many activities more exhilarating than learning a new technology and figuring out how to put it to practical use.

I maintain a web site and blog about Java Technologies, Java Sanity. If you support a J2EE Application Server, I suspect you'll find something of interest there.

I also enjoy putting my kiln to use firing hand built pottery. On occasion, I'll enjoy a game of Galaga or some other classic arcade game (MAME).

Back in 1993, I resurrected a text based multi user game named SlothMUD. Looking back at something that seemed at the time to be merely a "time suck", I'm really amazed at how I developed myself through the effort. Much of my personal and professional success all started with this hobby.

  • I may have learned fundamental development techniques in college, but I really learned to develop, design and debug software while supporting this game.
  • It drove me to learn Linux skills, which parlayed right into Unix and enterprise systems support.
  • It was a game that had active players 24x7, so stability and uptime were critical to keeping players happy.
  • My leadership abilities were enhanced by recruiting and coordinating the volunteers to maintain all aspects of the game.
  • I learned a lot about diverse cultures. Players and maintainers came from a variety of backgrounds and many countries.
The game still continues, I help out a bit, but it's not that high on my priority list these days. I suspect as long as there are players wanting to play, there will be new volunteers wanting to improve and maintain the game.

The Microsoft Humor page is something out of my past. Microsoft isn't really the evil empire these days. I suspect that has more to do with my own perspective changing than anything else. I did enjoy compiling the list and I'll leave it here for the sake of history.
