Cloning eq

Postby *Splork* » Mon Dec 25, 2006 11:54 am

Friendly warning, those caught cloning eq when I finish checking logs will be wiped or severly demoted.

We also plan on running our clone finder which will remove all objects of that particular item( including the original).

Those who wish to be looked upon with kindness can get ahold of me before I get ahold them. It could be the difference of saving your character.

Several players have been wiped, demoted, or passworded. Over 150 cloned items have already been removed from the game via this route. We will be running the clone finder again within the next week or two and remove more items.

If you attempt to log in and your password has been changed(and you cloned eq), get ahold of me.

Cheaters

Postby Jag » Fri Dec 29, 2006 1:38 pm

This problem of people cheating in various ways has happened a few times since I've been playing. I guess I don't really find it surprising, but I do feel a bit disappointed in people when I hear about it.

Someone could probably do an interesting paper on how peoples ethics change when in fantasy as opposed to RL. Or maybe how they don't change.

Something I would never suggest in RL but would on Sloth is public humiliation for cheaters. I am thinking stocks or pillories, in town, where the offending characters are locked in for their period of punishment.

Might have some fun with it and it would let non-cheaters have some warning about who the cheaters are so we can be careful when trading or selling eq or otherwise interacting with them.

Oooh, a permanent brand on their forehead... no wait, they might like that.

There have been and may still be bugs that permit you to clone items. You really shouldn't do it - ethical considerations aside, items have unique IDs, and if two items have the same unique ID then we will know it's a clone next time we bother to run the clone detector. In this case we hadn't run it in 3 or 4 years, because we hadn't noticed any problems with cloning, but as soon as we did we found a big pile of cloned items. (I can almost guarantee there aren't any ways to clone items that don't result in duplicated unique IDs).

The recent cloning appears to be restricted to a fairly small group of people and their alts, but I guess they must have been selling stuff because a whole lot of people have a single cloned item. These people won't get reimbursed by us, but we will replace the cloned item with a (worthless) item that lists who else had copies, so the buyers can take it up with them.

Also, you shouldn't clone things because having to muck around updating the clone detector code makes me very annoyed, and then I don't code other stuff.

Thanks for the update. Can you please post when you've completed the purge, then players can go check if anything has gone poof and not wonder if there's more to go. Cheers.

Abuses

Postby Avatar » Fri Dec 29, 2006 11:41 pm

Not really related to the cloning eq, but I've been wondering. Are the drachma books personal now? I remember we were told at the time that it was ok to buy books with one character and pass them to another. Now I just feel like I should have taken advantage of that at the time.

Since I didn't, now I'll have to spend a lot of drachma from my main characters to buy whatever spells I want.
