Wandering Kender stole and died almost at same time

I suppose I am a victim of a bug. Today I went to Autumnal Forest to kill a Wandering Kender and everything went fine. At the moment he died, right after the "your blood freezes" message I received a new message with something about kenders hands and my shoulder (don't remember the text, exactly).
On the gossip I recieved an explanation, that he stole something from me. And I am missing a backpack with potions in my inventory. Yet, autoloot gave me only coins.
Could it be a bug?
