Server update/move->downtime

Postby *Splork* » Wed May 13, 2015 10:42 am

Our server is being moved to a better facility this Friday.

If everything goes as plans, we will only be down between 1 and 2 hours starting May 15, 2015 @ 7:00PM PDT.

This change will result in a huge improvement in your service. You will benefit from a 1 Gbps port, full 1 Gbps internal networking, even better multiple redundant fiber optic internet feeds, and full dual-conversion N+1 power systems.

Wow, thats cool. Do we really use so much bandwich now, to see any difference? I had feeling that whole server could fit into 10mbps, with type of content mud uses(and its ability to compress).
Though still, better not worse anyway :)

I am considering doing an old style CHAOS boot, or just opening up my cport and doing something for the 2hrs downtime. Any ideas? (No eq prizes etc)

Alternately we could do something after server is back.

Email me with ideas...

My 5 cents.
Bandwidth is not only thing that matters in our case. In fact, Bandwidth is not matter because we dont send/receive large amounts of information. What is matter is Delay. Simplest way to measure the Delay is to ping slothmud.org. Big boys measure Delay using iperf tool (if you dont know what is it - then you dont need it).
Also, you cant measure the Delay using funky browser flash tools, because browser adds error, and flash plugin adds error.

I think it would rock if we could all log in a level av 40 with 100% pop rates and 10d10+20 Breeze Swords!

Hail yeah!

Judging by the stability, RAM and server software modules/versioning is more important, than bandwidth. Unless we had bandwidth-hungry neighours on the previous hosting.

I've never had problems with slothmud.org not being able to transmit kilobytes of compressed text, really, except for a few cases, where some servers on the route to slothmud.org were not transmitting enough. I'm not sure changing the server would completely remove other laggy servers from my route, will have to see how it goes.

Then again, thanks for the move - if it's better, so much the better.

We are not switching hosts, our host is simply moving us to their new Tier 4 Date Center which was recently finished.
