Forum Question

Sorry if this does not belong here, it's the best place I could think of..

Is there a way to change the settings so that every thread is read "oldest first", instead of having to go to the bottom of every page and switch it to "oldest first" manually?

if you look closely, at the bottom of this post (and every other post for that matter) there is the option to sort by newest first, oldest, etc.

I think that's what Maketa meant.. at the bottom of every thread that option is there, but it defaults back to newest at top when you go to the next thread.. unfortuantely the option to change that particular default behavior is not part of the profile options it seems..

yes you can. go to home page. go to bottom right hand corner. click my account. in that screen click comments setup. from there, choose your settings

Doesn't work for me either, and that was already set to "Oldest first"..

I think that setting only affects how comments to newsposts are displayed, not forum posts.

Um, how are we using the boards? As in, is it an out of the box type thing or do we compile source? If it's the latter, it might be possible to build the option in yourself since the only difference is that oldest first has &start=0 tacked onto the end of the http request.

it's from phpBB.com. I just checked on an existing phpBB forum I have installed and have admin rights on, and no, this does not appear to be configurable. The default is oldest first, and the option is not stored in the cookie either if a user wants to change to newest first. If someone wants to try hacking the code.. good luck.

Well, why are the boards set to newest first anyway? This is the first forum that I have ever seen that does "newest first", all others that I have been to are "oldest first"..

dunno, just seems to be the default behavior.. the phpBB forum I set up a few months ago is the same way... although when I look at phpBB community forum, it is set up as oldest first.

I looked at their help files and I couldn't see any mention of it, and the search option on the help forum is not working.. ..my guess is it's not so much a bug as an oversight and is probably something that should be stored on the cookie as part of your preferences.

Personally newest first kinda makes sense to me as a regular.. saves having to scoll to the bottom of every thread if I've already read most of it.
