Welcome to the land of SlothMUD. May your visit here be... Interesting.

The South Gate of Newbatia
A rutted dirt roadway leads north between a pair of squat square towers
that mark the southern limit of the thriving community of Newbatia. Heavy
traffic moves between the town and the aerial docks to the south. The
road is lit by regularly spaced lanterns hanging from brass poles. Mountains
are visible on the southwestern horizon.
Exits: North South Up
The corpse of Inra is lying here.
A small waterskin has been dropped here.
A large sign with info for newbies has been placed here.
Rebel ::LeMuRs:: wants to buy black-leather-hauberk is standing here.
An oafish man stands here on guard duty.

Not requiring a great amount of intelligence, the job of guarding the gates
of Newbatia is best filled by someone with a lot of zeal. The massive
guard is just such a person. Keeping himself from getting bored by
harassing all newcomers, the big oaf is clearly someone with too much time
and authority for his own good.
A big oaf is in excellent condition.

You attempt to peek at the inventory:
You can't see anything.
A big oaf tells you 'Can I help you with something?'
You are mortally wounded, and will die soon, if not aided.

P.S. I regularly see newbie starting gear lying around at the South Gate, probably the result of actions of the oaf.

Splork disabled this proc today.

Not sure why it was even there.

Thanks for the report.

I'm sure someone put it there with the best intentions.

Thank you for your work.

You were the first "newbie" to eat it. Congrats.

I'm pretty sure I wasnt the first one being attacked by the oaf, because I had to help a newbie finish it off.

Even though my automatic glance at the oaf does seem stupid, I wonder what's the benefit of this proc to the MUD.

Yeah, after discussing it with you online and you demanding I explain the benefit of the proc...

The benefit of the proc is seeing Taron dying to a level 8 mob with his 2x20 character and laughing at him.

I had a small amount of sympathy until you admitted to me that you knew the proc existed even. Then I just had to laugh. And making people laugh is definitely a contribution to society.

The background on the proc is that something like this went way back to Rei or Jyan, I forget which, then I came along and added level checks. Now in retrospect, I could have made the level check higher or even added an additional hit point check.

The part that annoyed me, was the incorrect implication on your part that south gate was full of equipment of all the people who were quitting as a result of being killed by this proc. This is just you twisting facts and displacing your outrage in a way that you know will get more sympathy. Because you know, to hear that Taron got slain by the oaf at South Gate is just funny, so better to imply that the immortals are needlessly slaying newbies and thereby ruining the game. So please in the future spare us your displaced outrage and if you are pissed that something killed you, just say so.
Talk to the clown.

Thanks for the laugh. I needed it. After the month I have had... Cousin getting shot at and will probably die, friend of years died, $800 for car repairs, $760 to IRS, and some other sh*t I prefer not to talk about, I needed a good laugh.

I didn't know that the oaf had a level check.

I only reported what I saw: newbie stuff at sgate and it can't be explained by dropping, because it usually goes poof. As you tell me that the oaf has nothing to do with it, then fine, I admit I'm wrong in that assumption, but only in that. The log still is valid.

Moreover, I pointed it out only to help the mud be a friendlier place: having a mob that attacks curious people at the starting point can be pretty surprisingly annoying, especially, if it's a recall point. Though it's entertaining for onlookers, no doubt.

I have no intention to force anyone do something: only through demonstration that something can be done better.
If you have any reasons to believe the proc is fun, then say so and defend it from Splork and Breeze.

Though I do admit that that death was the last one in a chain of deaths, and losing 1/5 of exp to a proc was very disappointing. Now that you point out that its a 30k mob it's even humiliating. So it wasn't very fun to me ,and I thought it might not be as fun to other people, who look at mobs. Guess I'm wrong in my assumption that people do look around and/or check mobs for looted stuff.

He has nothing to defend. He didn't write the proc and in fact did add a level check.

I myself would have probably set the level check to 1x20 but it's a stupid thing to argue about since the proc is disabled so let's leave it at that and call it a day.
